Team with Great Matchups
Giants vs.Diamondback @Cubs - Offensively, the Giants are extremely challenged.  To give you an idea of how much trouble they are having at the plate, Ryan Vogelsong is tied for the team lead in AVG.  Yes, pitcher Ryan Vogelsong.  However, they are top 10 in ERA(3.28), WHIP(1.20) and BAA(2.20) which is actually best in the Bigs.  They are currently on a nice run winning 5 of their last 6, while allowing just 16 runs.  Arizona comes to the Bay Area losing 3 of their last 6 and have to face the front end of the Giants Staff, starting with Lincecum.  While the Dbacks do bring a lot of power to the plate, they have 3 starters with over 30 strike outs.  This Giants staff is going to take full advantage of this and each starter could see 7-10 k's.  That being said,The Freak, Jonathan Sanchez, and Matt Cain could each strike out 27 batters, but if the Giants do not score, they can't win.  Ian Kennedy, Armando Galarraga and Daniel Hudson are capable of shutting down a weak offense.  Buster Posey is going to have step up and the return of Andres Torres on Tuesday should give this SF offense the boost they need atop their lineup to take at least 2 of 3 from the Diamond Backs.
Giants win series 3-0
  • Tim Lincecum - 8 ip, 4 h, 0 er, 9 k ND
  • Jonathan Sanchez - 6 ip , 6 h, 3 er, 7 k, W
  • Matt Cain - 7.2 ip, 7 h, 2 er, 7 k, W
  • Ian Kennedy - 8 ip 4 h, 0 er, 8 k ND
  • Armando Galarraga - 5.1 ip , 8 h, 4 er, 4 k, L
  • Daniel Hudson - 6.2 ip, 7 h, 3 er, 5 k, L
  • Buster Posey - 2 for 7, r, bb, k
  • Andres Torres - 4 for 10, r, 2 2b, 2 rbi, 2 bb, 3k
  • Giants Pitching Staff - 29 k
The Giants will be leaving Cali after 10PM EST, only to play an early afternoon game the following day in the Windy City.  Hopefully starter Madison Bumgarner flys out ahead of the team to get the proper rest and warm up needed, as he will be facing Ryan Dempster.  Earlier this year, we did a who would you rather have between the Savvy Veteran and the Top Prospect.  Both pitchers are struggling early on as Bumgarner is 0-5 with a 4.21 era and Dempster is 1-4 with a 7.20 era.  Bumgarner's last 3 starts have looked much better as he has compiled 19 ip allowing 14 h, 2 er, 4 bb and striking out 19.  He has received just 2 runs in his last 3 starts.  Dempster has also looked to fix himself as his last two starts have totaled 14 ip, allowing 11 h, 3 er, 2 bb and 9 k.  He also has not received any support with just 1 run scored in his last 2 starts.

Even though the Cubbies have the 3rd best team BA, they do not manufacture any runs.  Soriano is tied for the league lead in home runs with 11, but he only has 21 rbi.  Chicago is another ball club with a lot of strike out candidates in Soriano, Marlon Byrd, and Carlos Pena.  The series ends on Sunday with Zambrano battling Lincecum and the Giants will be looking to win the rubber match and take the series.
Series split 1-1 final game ppd
  • Madison Bumgarner - 6 ip, 5 h, 3 er, 6 k, ND
  • Ryan Dempster - 6 ip, 6 h, 2 er, 11 k, W

  • Andres Torres -  3 for 5, 3b, 2 r, sb, k
  • Buster Posey - 2 for 4, 2k
  • Alfonso Soriano - 2 for 6, r, bb, 4k

  • Tim Lincecum/Carlos Zambrano - Game rained out

Team with Tough Matchups-
Padres @Brewers @Rockies - If you thought the Giants offensive woes were bad, take a look at the Padres. In 34 games, they have managed just 105 runs and their best hitter is batting just .263, and its catcher Nick Hundley.  In just the last 10 games, Hundley's average has dropped from .317 to .263.  If the Padres pitching staff was not holding a 2.95 era, this team would be 7-27 not 14-20.  San Diego has actually won 5 of their last 8 games, but a 6 game road trip against the Brewers and Rockies should change that.

Mat Latos will open the series against another pitcher who started the season on the DL, Zack Greinke.  Zack had a poor first start, but he is a CY Young award winner.  Latos(0-4) on the other hand has not been to bad as he has 30 k in just 27.2 ip, but his era is higher than it should be at 4.55.  After Latos, Clayton Richard and Tim Stauffer will try to keep the Brew Crew off the scoreboard if SD wants a shot at winning one game this series.  Ryan Braun is leading the team in nearly every offensive category with a .307 avg and 27 rbi, while Prince Fielder leads the team with 10 hr.
Brewers win series 2-1

  • Mat Latos - 5.2 ip, 7 h, 4er, 4 k, L
  • Zack Greinke - 6 ip, 5 h, 2 er, 9 k W
  • Clayton Richard - 3.1 ip, 10 h, 7 er, L
  • Tim Stauffer - 5.1 ip, 9 h, 6 er, 7 k ND
  • Ryan Braun - 3 for 10, 3 r, 2 rbi, 2 bb, 2k
  • Prince Fielder - 4 for 12, 3 r, 2b, hr, 2 rbi, bb, 2k

San Diego will make a stop in Colorado on the way home for 3 games with Rockies.  Aaron Harang will pitch in the second game of this series and he has been the lone bright spot for the Padres starting rotation, as he is the only starter with a winning record(5-2).  Even though the Rockies are just 2-7 in their last 9 games, they are still one of the most dangerous team in the NL.  Players like Tulo and Cargo strike fear in every pitcher, and they can score runs at will.  Jorge de la Rosa and Jhoulys Chacin are a combined 8-3 and they will start the first two games.  In 84 innings, the two have tallied 74 strike outs.  With Hundley, Chase Headley, Cameron Maybin, Will Venable, Ryan Ludwick and Brad Hawpe all striking out over 20 times this season, de la Rosa and Chacin could rack up a ton of strike outs this weekend.    At best, the Padres finished this trip 2-4.
Padres win series 2-1
