UPDATE (6/9): Pedroia went back to Boston for an examination on his knee, and got great news! He will not need surgery and should be back in the Red Sox lineup on Friday night.
Boston Red Sox second basemen Dustin Pedroia is headed back to Boston to have his right knee examined, which might result in surgery. If Pedroia needs the surgery he will get it immediately and it will keep him off the field for at least a month. Pedroia said he has to get it checked out because it's been bothering him for quite some time now, and by his numbers this year it's pretty clear it's effecting his game.
Pedroia is only hitting .247 with only 13 extra base hits in 59 games. He has 9 doubles, 4 home runs and 22 RBI with 31 runs scored. However he does have 13 stolen bases in 15 attempts and is 6th in the majors with 41 walks.
With Scutaro back off the DL, Lowrie would move to 2B, and Scutaro would take over SS while Pedroia is gone.
We will provide details as soon as we hear how the examination goes, and whether or not he will have to undergo surgery.
