Monster Day For A Ray

On Thursday it was the Ben Zobrist show, and fans were lucky because they got a double dose as the Rays played a day/night double header against the Minnesota Twins.  The Rays absolutely dominated this double header but it was all about Zobrist.  In game one the Rays beat the twins 15-3, in which Zobrist went 4 for 6 with 8 rbi and 2 runs scored.  He hit a 3-run homer as well as doubling twice and singling in the game.  Zobrist had rbi's on all 4 of his hits:
  • RBI single in the 1st
  • 3-run homer in the 6th
  • 2-run double in the 7th
  • 2-run double in the 9th
It could not have been a better day for Zobrist to play a double header as his bat was still on fire.  In game two the Rays won again, beating the Twins 6-1.  Zobrist went 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 2 rbi.  He homered doubled and singled, once again falling a triple shy of a cycle in back to back game, in the same day.

For the day Ben Zobrist finished 7 for 10 with 10 rbi, 5 runs scored, 3 doubles, and 2 home runs.  He now leads the MLB with 25 rbi on the year and tied for 2nd with 7 home runs.  Zobrist raised his batting average 53 points in the day, as he was hitting just .205 coming in and left hitting .258.  I really hope none of you had this man on the bench for the double header, because those are just monster numbers that occasionally take a full fantasy teams to reach in a week.

What are your waiver wire options??

David Murphy will see a lot of playing time and is only owned in 30% of leagues.  In just 138 games last season he hit .291 with 12 hr and 65 rbi.
Murphy is the new Josh Hamilton: Texas has lost left fielder Josh Hamilton for six to eight weeks with a shoulder fracture and the team will turn to David Murphy in his spot. Mitch Moreland could also see some time in left, but Murphy is expected to get the majority of the playing time.
(Updated 04/12/2011) - CBSSPORTS

Logan Morrison is a great option and is owned in less than 50% of most leagues.  He had 6 hits in the 3 game series against the Astros and now has 3 doubles 2 hr and 6 rbi.

Teams with Great Matchups

Phillies vs Astros - A strong Phillies lineup vs a weak Astros pitching staff should equal lots of stats for Rollins, Victorino, and Howard.  Also a positive here is that the Astros bats are not that great so Halladay, Lee, and Oswalt should each have nice starts to their seasons with Ws.
Phillies win series 3-0
  • Halladay(6 ip, 5 h, 1 er, 6 k, ND) Oswalt(6 ip, 5h, 2 er, 6 k, W) Lee(7 ip, 4 h , 3 er, 11 k, W)

  • Rollins - 6 for 12, 4 r

UPDATE: Strained Oblique Sends Evan Longoria to the DL

Longoria could be out at least 3 weeks!

Longoria was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a left oblique strain, with the team expecting the All-Star to be out at least three weeks. Longoria, who pulled himself out of Saturday's game, said an MRI exam revealed a "moderate" strain, and he hopes three weeks is the maximum. He will be re-evaluated today.

Evan Longoria was taken out of Saturday's game during the 6th inning, after suffering from soreness that he felt during batting practice before the game.  He said it got worse and worse as the game went on, and the Rays decided to place him on the DL on today (Sunday).

Well this isn't news Longoria owners want to hear, but it's better that this is happening now so he can get his rest and come back healthy.  This is something that would not go away if Longoria tried to play through it.  It's only 15 days, Evan will be back and we all know he will make up those stats and be an MVP candidate at the end of the year as always.

It looks like Sean Rodriquez will play 3B in the mean time for the Rays, and they have purchased Felipe Lopez's contract and Elliot Johnson started at 2b today.  His minor league stats here.  Follow MLBDepthCharts for more info

UPDATE:Matt Holliday Out With Appendectomy

UPDATE: The Cards have delayed putting Holliday on the DL, which would be good news for Holliday and Pujols owners, as the Cards are hoping for a speedy recvovery.

via ESPN
Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday was having an appendectomy Friday and the team is unsure how long he will be out.
General manager John Mozeliak said the surgery in St. Louis is not an emergency procedure and that he'll have an idea on Saturday how long the 31-year-old will be sidelined.
Holliday was 3-for-4 and hit a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning of Thursday's 5-3 11-inning loss to the San Diego Padres. Holliday left Busch Stadium complaining of stomach discomfort.

This is a huge blow to the Cards as they will lose Holliday for a period of time.  Losing Holliday hurts the value of Pujols as now Berkman Freese will hit behind him which will allow pitchers to pitch around him.  For all you Holliday owners keep an eye on the situation.
