In 2010, the Colorado Rockies drafted SS Josh Rutledge in the 3rd round out of Alabama. It must be tough when you are drafted by a team that signed their Franchise Shortstop (Troy Tulowitzki) to a 10 year extension, but Josh did not let that bother him. In his 1st full season at Hi-A Ball he hit .348 with 33 doubles, 9 triples, and 9 home runs, driving in 71 runs. This got scouts to take notice as Rutledge was ranked the Rockies #10 prospect heading into Spring Training.
He started the season at AA Tulsa and continued to just tear the cover off the ball. In just 87 games, he had 27 doubles, 3 triples, and 13 homers while hitting .303. He did all of this while Tulo has missed every game since May 30 with a hamstring issue, likely to sideline him for the remainder of the season. The only other players to man the SS position for the Rockies this season have been Marco Scutaro (traded) and Jonathan Herrera who is hitting just .259 as a SS. It is clear that Rutledge is going to be the guy for the remainder of the season and at just 47% owned in Yahoo leagues, Josh can help every roster and will fill the stat sheet night in and night out.
The Rockies thought VERY highly of Rutledge, as they called him to The Show, while skipping AAA. Slugging a cool .700, Rutledge has already hit 9 doubles, 2 triples and 6 home runs scoring 13 times and driving in 18 runs while also stealing 3 bags in just 22 games! In the last 30 days, only JOSE REYES has more fantasy points than Rutledge! If you want to win your league, its guys like Josh Rutledge that make it happen!
So what about next season when Troy Tulowitzki returns? Well Marco Scutaro was traded to the Giants and Rutledge will be the starting 2B next season for the Colorado Rockies and could provide fantasy owners with Dustin Pedroia/Ian Kinsler type numbers, and will be drafted in MUCH later rounds. When comparing Rutledge to 2B over the past 30 days, NOT ONE 2B eligible player has more points that Rutledge!
