Fantasy Baseball Week 4 (4/23 - 4/29)

4/28 - The Washington Nationals have called up Bryce Harper to play in this weekends series with the Dodgers, as Ryan Zimmerman has finally landed on the 15-Day DL.  He has been added in over 50,000 Yahoo fantasy leagues!  Did you pick him up?

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have also called up there top prospect, Mike Trout, after releasing Bobby Abreu.  Trout has been added in over 20,000 Yahoo leagues.  To be honest, I would rather own Trout at this point then Harper.


4/25 - The New York Yankees Michael Pineda will undergo surgery which will sideline him for the rest of the season, and possibly some of next season.  67% of owners on Yahoo might want to drop him and free up that DL spot on their rosters.

The San Francisco Giants have placed Aubrey Huff on the 15-Day DL with an anxiety disorder.  This is great news for Brandon Belt owners!


4/24 - The Washington Nationals are fearful that Ryan Zimmerman could miss more than week with a strained right shoulder.  No structural damage, so surgery should be avoided.

The New York Mets have placed Jason Bay on the 15-Day DL with a non-displaced rib fracture.  It was getting close to say farewell to Bay anyway so this is a blessing in disguise for fantasy owners.  Cody Ross (28% Yahoo), JD Martinez (66%), Alejandro De Aza (59%) and Jordan Schafer(53%) are you best bets in replacing Bay if they are still available in your leagues.  If not, let us know who is and who you are thinking about adding to your roster.  Mike Pelfrey could possibly require Tommy John's which would end his season.

The Atlanta Braves have sent Jair Jurrjens to the Minors.  On July 6 of last season, Jurrjens had won his 12th game of the season while losing just 3.  With a 12-3 record, Jurrjens had an incredible 1.87 ERA.  Since that start, Jurrjens is just 1-5 with 5 no decisions a 4.56 ERA and averaged just 5.2 innings/start.  He was shut down in September of last season with a bone bruise in his knee and did not make an appearance that month.  He has allowed 3 or more earned runs in 9 of those 11 starts.  He did that just twice in first 16 starts last season.

(2) Heat vs (7) Knicks - The Knicks played the Heat well this season, minus the one game with Jeremy Lin.  There is no Linsanity this time around, and Carmelo Anthony is playing like the leagues best player at the moment.  I want to call the upset here but Heat in 7

(3) Pacers vs (6) Magic - Had this matchup featured Dwight Howard, I would say Magic in 7.  This series could provide some boring basketball.  Indiana should be able to hold off the Magic and win in 6.

(4) Celtics vs (5) Hawks - This series could go either way and Josh Smith vs Kevin Garnett should be a lot of fun to watch.  Neither team has a center so there will be a ton of awkward lineups during this 7 game series.  In the end, the team that has won it all will win again.  Celtics in 7

(1) San Antonio Spurs vs (8) Utah Jazz - Combined these two teams won over 50 games at their home courts.  You can expect a 7 game series here with no road wins.  Spurs in 7

(2) Oklahoma City Thunder vs (7) Dallas Mavericks - This could turn into a shooting clinic featuring Kevin Durant and Dirk Nowitzki.  The speed and defense of the Thunder will be to much for the Mavericks to handle.  Thunder in 6

(3) Los Angeles Lakers vs (6) Denver Nuggets - Should be fun to watch JaVale McGee guard Andrew Bynum.  Kobe and Co. will take it in 5.

(4) Memphis Grizzlies vs (5) Los Angeles Clippers - This will be the most entertaining series in the West.  Both teams run the fast break so well, this series is bound to have tons of highlight plays.  Gotta go with CP3 and his leadership ability to take the Grizzlies in 7.

Fantasy Basketball 2012 - Reviewing PG Rankings

Derrick Rose, Stephen Curry, Darren Collison and Kyle Lowry all failed to stay healthy this year and REALLY hurt a lot of fantasy owners.  But it allowed guys like Goran Dragic to finally get the minutes they deserve and prove they can lead their team on the court.  Again though, a verteran player in Tony Parker proved that you can never count out veteran players.

Fantasy Basketball 2012 - Reviewing SF Rankings

No one figured Gordon Hayward and/or Alonzo Gee would make this list before the season tipped off ..... right?  Hayward proved that NBA talent can come from a Mid Major school and you have to feel happy for a guy like Gee to finally get a chance to play and prove he is an NBA talent.  Once again, we failed to value veteran players as Shawn Marion and Tayshaun Prince finished in the 15, while we ranked them 23 and 24 respectively.

While Paul Millsasp proved to be a top 5 PF this season, we are most upset that we disrespected Antawn Jamison.  The veteran deserved more respect than 28th best PF before the season began and he earned it, finshing in the top 10 and proving to be more durable than some of the up and coming young talent in the league.

Fantasy Basketball 2012 - Reviewing C Rankings

Taking a look back at how we ranked the Centers coming into this shortened season, we CLEARLY under estimated DeMarcus Cousins' ability.  Ranked 20th in the preseason, mostly because of character issues and playing for a bad team, Cousins dominated the league this year, only taking a back seat to Superman himself, Dwight Howard.

Get To Know Him - Lance Lynn

The #1 pitcher in the MLB right now is a young 24 year old right hander who most people have never even heard of.  Lance Lynn made his MLB debut last season on June 2, earning a start against the San Francisco Giants.  Outside of one World Series appearance, it is the only time Lance Lynn has allowed more than 1 earned run in a game!  Lynn lost that first start, but came back strong against the Astros allowing just 1 run over 5 innings.  From June 9th on Lynn moved to the bullpen and lowered his ERA from 5.23 to 3.12, striking out 32 batters and walking just 8 in 24.1 innings.

Lynn has now moved back into the starting rotation, which is something he did 99 times in the minors.  Over that span of 99 games, Lynn won 32 starts while losing just 18.  He compiled 358 strikeouts and walked just 150 batters over 414 innings.  The only downside to Lynn's game is that he gives up the Long Ball. 

In his 4 starts this season, Lance Lynn has allowed just 4 earned runs, 1 in each start, over 27 innings which has lead to a 1.33 ERA.  The strange thing is that he has given up 3 home runs, obviously all solo jacks.  You have to assume that if he continues to give up the home runs, eventually they will happen with runners on.  But you have to love the fact that Lynn is just 77% owned in Yahoo leagues, because if you are reading this and he is not already on your roster....he should be!

Ryan Zimmerman Watch:15-Day DL

The Washington Nationals are doubtful of a quick recovery for Ryan Zimmerman who has not played since April 20th. Zimmerman says he has an AC Joint sprain in his shoulder. If Zimmerman does land on the DL, Chase Headley is still just 73% owned in Yahoo leagues so there is a possibility he is available in your league. However, if he is already on another roster, Mike Aviles (69%) and Mike Moustakas (63%) are the next best options.

Hunter Pence Watch: Back in Lineup

After diving for a ball in Sundays game, Hunter Pence sat out Monday's game with pain in his shoulder.  Today he is going for a precautionary MRI.  Fantasy owners and the Phillies are desperate for good news as Pence was drafted early (12th OF in ESPN Drafts, 13th in Yahoo) and the Phillies are already struggling offensively without Chase Utley and Ryan Howard.

Hitters: JD Martinez and Alejandro De Aza are the first outfielders on this list that I would look to add.  Jordan Schafer is still killing it but guys like him and Nolan Reimold just don't have the track record to back up their hot starts.  Matt Joyce is a tricky guy too because he had such a great first half last season before slumping after the All-Star break.

Pitchers: I liked Bartolo Colon a lot more last season when he had the Yankees offense support him, but he is proving to be a valuable fantasy pitcher.  Ivan Nova is suprisingly owned in just 58% of Yahoo leagues.  This guy does nothing but rack up Wins.

Fantasy Baseball Week 3 (4/16 - 4/22)

4/22 -

• Marlon Byrd was traded to the Red Sox for Michael Bowden.  Byrd should jump right into the Sox lineup. The Cubs then placed Ryan Dempters on the 15-Day DL(quad) and recalled Tony Campana.
• The Phillies placed Cliff Lee on the 15-Day DL (oblique)
• The Diamondbacks placed Dan Hudson on the 15-Day DL (shoulder)
• The Blue Jays placed Sergio Santos on the 15-Day DL (shoulder)
• AJ Burnett made his Pirates debut.  7 innings 7 strikeouts 2 walks, 0 runs and the W

4/19 - New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner has been placed on the 15-Day DL with a strained right shoulder. St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Lance Berkman should be joining him soon as he has aggrevated his calf again. Matt Carpenter will take over the everyday first base duties for the Cardinals is now a must own. He has produced more than most of your starting first basemen/third basemen, driving in 11 runs and he has just 24 AB!

4/18 - The Diamondbacks have called up 1st round draft pick AJ Pollock.  The kid has wheels and hit 41 doubles while stealing 36 bases last year in the minors.  He is getting the nod in center field today due to recent injuires to Chris Young and Justin Upton.  Not much long term value but could help you the rest of this week/however long Young/Upton are out.

Another week into Fantasy Baseball and more players have hit the disabled list.  Jacoby Ellsbury will miss at
least the next two months, while Brian Wilson is done for the season.  Let us know how you plan on replacing these guys and we will tell you if we have better ideas!

Adrian Beltre Watch: Strained Hamstring Day to Day

Adrian Beltre left the first game of today's double header with Tigers after straining his hamstring.  He was 2 for 2 with a double and a run scored before leaving the game.  Alberto Gonzalez came in to pinch run and has played 3b since.

Justin Upton Watch: Pinch Ran Wednesday

Justin Upton was used as a pinch runner in last nights game, but Scott Miller of CBS has tweeted that Upton has been placed on the DL.  Updates to come!

With news of a ligament tear, you have to wonder if 15 days is long enough. Make sure you have a solid backup plan in case this takes longer then anticipated!

What a Relief!

There are only so many closer in the Majors.  Each team has their designated one, sometimes two guys who get the call in the 9th.  But fantasy baseball requries more than just closers.  There are tons of guys in each teams bullpen that take the mound each night in the middle innings.  How do you decifer which one belongs on your fantasy team?  Here is a quick list of relievers off to a great start:

Jacoby Ellsbury Watch: 15-Day DL (No Immediate Surgery)

Boston Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, who suffered a subluxation of his right (non-throwing shoulder) last Friday, had his MRI exams read by noted California orthopedist Dr. Lewis Yocum and will not need immediate surgery, manager Bobby Valentine said Tuesday.  -ESPN

Good news is that surgery is not neccessary at the moment.  Bad news is that he is still on a 4-8 week timetable.

Just How Important is April Baseball?

The Magic Johnson owned Los Angeles Dodgers are off to a 9-1 start.  But how excited should the fans be?  Just 3 of the last 11 World Series have featured the team with the best record in April.  The positive of that is twice that team won the Series ('04, '05).  The average record of the World Series teams has been a mediocre 15-11, so for those teams who are hovering around the .500 mark for now, be patient as your team has the best odds of making the World Series!

In 2005, the Astros were just 10-16 on May 1, making them the worst April team to make the WS in the last 11 seasons.  The only other teams with a losing April record to make the WS were the 2007 Colorado Rockies 11-16, and the 2002 Anaheim Angels 12-14.  The Angels went on to win the World Series.

The 2010 Texas Rangers, and 2004 St. Louis Cardinals were both .500 at the end of April.  They both lost the World Series.

Hitters: Add JD Martinez!  He is an absolute beast and will be amongt the top outfielders this season!  Stay away from Duncan and Schafer.  There are too many outfielders to rely on those guys.  Matt Carpenter is also a guy I would avoid.  He has 30 double power, but he is just filling in for Lance Berkman who is due back any day now. 

Pitchers: Westbrook, Lohse and Porcello are good for innings and a low ERA, but do not expect strikeouts from them.

Fantasy Baseball Week 2 (4/9 - 4/15)

With the first week of fantasy baseball officially over, unless you play on ESPN, many owners feel like the Diamondbacks, Mets, Rays and Tigers who swept their opponents, while others feel like the Braves, Giants, Red Sox, Twins and Yankees who were all swept this weekend.  Which side are you on?

Michael Morse is out until at least June.  To the 94% of Yahoo owners who own him....DROP HIM.

Johnny Damon is back in baseball!  The Cleveland Indians have signed Damon who hit 16 HRs last season and drove in 73 runs while stealing 19 bases.  Damon will have fantasy value regardless of where he hits in the Indians lineup.  If he replaces Shelly Duncan in the Indians lineup, he will be slotted into the 7 hole, but I doubt the Indians want Johnny Damon batting 7.  I can see Cleveland slotting Damon in the 2 hole, moving Asdrubal Cabrera to the 3 spot, and Shin-Soo Choo to the 6/7 spot.  Updates to come.

David Wright has a fractured finger.  Not official yet, but expect Wright to join the 15-Day DL club.  Bad news for David Wright owners as this could take up to 6 week to recover from!  Wednesday will bring more results and news so stay posted!

Doug Fister is the first important fantasy player to join the 15-Day DL club (not including those from preseason)

• He has been diagnosed with a left costochondral strain.  The average person has never heard of this before.  But luckily for us, I happen to be dating a physical therapist who broke it down for us.  Dana says that Costo means rib and Chondro means cartilage so the cartilage around the ribs is inflamed.  She claims this is a tricky injury and Fister could be out more than a month!  If you need to replace Fister, don't do so without telling us your options!

Behind football, baseball is the second most popular fantasy sport played. It gives numbers crunchers games from morning till night, seven days a week. For hardcore fans the summer months of baseball are heaven, but what about casual fans? Is the day-to-day pressure and commitment too much?

Advanced Fantasy Baseball: Ten Reasons to Stay Patient with Your Fantasy Team

Patience. Slow starts are depressing for fantasy owners but panic ruins fantasy seasons. Often we come out of our drafts excited about our teams. We got this sleeper for that much and won't he be great! Then after three games and 11 at-bats we are ready to cut him to add that career back-up middle infielder. If you drafted a guy I think he deserves at least a full week of at-bats before you cut him.

Fantasy Baseball Week 1 (3/28 - 4/8)

Welcome back Fantasy Baseballers.  This year the season opens up in Japan with the Oakland Athletics playing host to the Seattle Mariners.  There will be just two games played, Wednesday at 6:10am EST and Thursday at 5:10am EST.  After a 6 day hiatus, the new look Miami Marlins will have the first pitch thrown on American soil in their brand new ballpark while hosting the St. Louis Cardinals for just a one game series on Wednesday night, 7:05pm EST.

With recent injuries to the closers of the Reds, Red Sox, Rays and Royals, we asked our friends at MLBDepthCharts which teams fill in closer had the most value...their answer?

Do you agree?  Mark Melancon saved 20 of 25 games for the woeful Astros last year and had just a 2.74 ERA.  In 74 innings pitched he struck out 66 batters.  Does that get the job done in the AL East?  Will he split saves with Alfredo Aceves? Alfredo Aceves has been named the closer for the Red Sox!  Aceves struck out just 80 batters in 114 innings last season but has a 1.08 WHIP in over 200 innings pitched in his short career.

The Reds Sean Marshall will get the nod in Cincinatti with Ryan Madsen done for the season.  He pitched in 75 innings for the Cubbies and had an excellent 2.22 ERA striking out 79 batters.  In the NL Central, Marshall to me has better value.
