Mark Teixeira Watch: No Structural Damage to Wrist

UPDATE: Teixeira does not have any structural damage to the wrist which is the best news he, the Yankees and fantasy owners could hear.  However, it is still possible that the pain is severe enough to warrant a DL stint.  More to follow.

In last nights loss to the Orioles, Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira dove for a ball and tried to shake it off..  He was removed from the game and there was no news on his status until Manager Joe Girardi had his post game press conference.  It would be a HUGE blow to the Yankees if they lost Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira in the same week.  Luckily for the Yankees though, they both got hurt BEFORE the trade deadline.

Fantasy Baseball Week 16 (7/23-7/29)

7/26 - Jonathan Lucroy (29% owned Yahoo) has been activated by the Milwaukee Brewers finally.  The last time he played was May 27th and he left fantasy owners without a catcher hitting .375 with 5 HRs and 30 RBI in just 43 games played.  Believe it or not Lucroy has played nearly half the games the other top catchers have and is still 21st overall in fantasy points and 16th in RBI.  Add him to your roster if you lost J.P. Arencibia or if you are struggling at the catcher position.  No catcher in baseball with over 16 ABs averages more points per at bat than Lucroy (Carlos Ruiz also avg 1.25 pts/ab...good company).

The Toronto Blue Jays have lost power hitting C J.P. Arencibia (58% owned Yahoo) for the next six weeks after a foul tip fractured his hand.  Only Jarrod Saltalamacchia (52%) (19) has hit more home runs than J.P. (16).  If you are looking to just replace his power numbers, than Salty or Wilin Rosario (26%) of the Colorado Rockies is your guy.  Padres C Yasmani Grandal (14%) and Royals C Salvado Perez (38%) are other viable options.

Fantasy Baseball Week 15 (7/9-7/22)

I selected this post to be featured on Sports Blogs. Please visit the site and vote for my blog!

7/20 - The Toronto Blue Jays and Houston Astros have agreed to a 10 player deal that lands J.A. Happ and Brandon Lyon in Toronto and sends Francisco Cordero and Ben Francisco to Houston.  Happ has had an up and down season in Houston and is currently 7-9 with a 4.83 ERA.   He has earned a decision in each of his last 14 starts going 6-8 with 6 starts allowing 2 or less earned runs and 4 starts of 5+ earned runs. Happ finishes his Astros career at just 18-28 over 3 seasons.  Clearly the 'Stros did not get back equal value in the Roy Oswalt deal, considering that 2 of the 3 players acquired (Happ & Anthony Gose) in the deal are now playing for the Blue Jays.  Change of scenery is always nice for struggling players, but as a pitcher going from the NL to the AL USUALLY does not translate into better stats.

HOWEVER, with the departure of Ben Francisco, Travis Snider has been called up to the Bigs.  Snider has been dominating AAA pitching and should see regular time in the OF along with Anthony Gose.  Not saying you should add Snider just yet, but he could help for a week or two with Bautista sidelined.

The Colorado Rockies have sent Jeremy Guthrie to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for Jonathan Sanchez.  Netiher pitcher is worth adding but it is interesting to note that this is the result of two TERRIBLE trades this off season.  The Rockies shipped Jason Hammel to Baltimore to add Guthrie to the rotation while the Royals traded Melky Cabrera for Jonathan Sanchez.  The Melk Man has been a top 15 fantasy player this year and before Jason Hammel's knee injury he was a top 30 pitcher.

7/19 - The Washington Nationals have activated closer Drew Storen from the 60-Day DL.  Storen should take back the reigns soon from Tyler Clippard who saved 15 games while blowing just 2 (one as recent as July 17).  It is perfect timing for the Nationals who are still in the thick of things in the NL East as Clippard was starting to unravel against the Mets.  In his last 2 save appearances, he allowed 3 HRs in 2 IP, blowing one save.  He did however strike out 5 batters.  Those were the only HRs Clippard had allowed all season.  He had only 8 ER to his name before allowing 5 in the last two nights.  Back to Storen, there is nothing set in stone for when he will get save opportunities again but he did save 43 games last season (48 opportunities).

7/16 - Cincinatti Reds All-Star 1B Joey Votto is set to miss 3-4 weeks after knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus.  Over the last 30 days, Paul Goldschmidt (78%) and Tyler Colvin (53%) have been the top producing 1b eligible players under 80% owned in Yahoo leagues.  In deeper leagues you could go after Ike Davis (48%), Anthony Rizzo (54%,) Adam LaRoche (55%) or even Adam Lind (29%).  Let us know what you are thinking about doing before actually doing so by leaving a comment!

7/15 - Baseball returned to action this weekend and has provided fantasy owners with some headaches.  One of the surprise pitchers of the season, Orioles Jason Hammel (73% owned Yahoo), left his start on Friday the 13th after just 3 innings and will now miss the next month.  He is to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery which will keep him out of the rotation until at least mid-August.  Tough loss for the Orioles who have kept pace with the Wildcard teams in the AL.

Jose Bautista Watch: 15-Day DL - Wrist Inflammation

UPDATE: Bautista lands on the DL with wrist inflammation.  Not the worst news fantasy owners could have heard but still could keep him sidelined longer than the 15-Day DL stint.  Who do you plan on replacing Joey Bats with?  Fellow Blue Bird Colby Rasmus (74% owned Yahoo) has been a Top 3 OF the past 30 days with 8 HRs and 24 RBI.  Jason Kubel (73%)  has also hit 8 HRs during the past 30 days with 21 RBI.  Michael Brantley (31%) has been on a tear since July began with 18 hits in 12 games, raising his batting average to .301.  He has already walked 8 times and has a .553 OBP this month.

Is it possible fantasy owners could lose Joey Bats, Big Papi and Joey Votto in the same day?!  More to come!

Gose Goes with the Pros

The Toronto Blue Jays may lose Jose Bautista for a long time with this wrist injury and as insurance, pulled top prospect Anthony Gose from his AAA game last night.  The California native, who was born in 1990 had been on the Blue Jays radar for a long time.  When the Blue Birds traded Roy Halladay to the Phillies in 2009, Gose was a can't touch prospect and Toronto settled on Kyle Drabek, Kyle d'Arnaud and Michael Taylor.  But just six months later the Phillies acquired Roy Oswalt from the Astros and along with J.A. Happ sent Anthony Gose to Houston.  Later that same day the Blue Jays sent Brett Wallace to Houston in exchange for Gose and he appears to be on his way to the Bigs.

Two things we know about the Gose.....he is extremely fast, and he strikes out a lot.  In the last 4 minor league seasons (including the first half of this season) Gose has swiped 220 bags and hit 40 triples!  In deeper leagues where SB count, Gose will absolutely be valuable, just don't expect much more than a .250-.265 batting avg AT BEST.  Playing on the turf in Toronto should benefit his skill set.

Pittsburgh Pirates - Fantasy Fillers

Fantasy Baseball Vision Agrees!  Seize the Pirates!

Originally posted on 7/6/2012
Hitters:
As good as the Pirates have been this season, their offense has struggled. Andrew McCutchen has been invaluable to the Pirates success but he is a well known commodity in the fantasy world.  Neil Walker (51%), who drove in 83 runs last season, found his stroke again and has the batting avg back up to .275.  He has scored 12 runs and driven in 7 in the last 10 games.  He finished June hitting .292 and has started July with a .375 avg.  Only Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees has been a better fantasy 2B over the past two weeks.

How Mark Trumbo is just 72% owned is mind boggling.  I almost feel like that is a glitch in Yahoo's system.  But if he is available, whether you are in 1st place of last, ADD HIM TO YOUR ROSTER!

Cleveland Indians - Fantasy Fillers

Hitters:
Fantasy favorite Carlos Santana (89% owned Yahoo) has struggled mightily hitting just .221 at the break.  The offense has been powered by Shin-Soo Choo (90%) and Michael Brantley in the outfield and Asdrubal Cabrera (96%) and Jason Kipnis(92%) in the infield.

Boston Red Sox - Fantasy Fillers

Hitters:
Will Middlebrooks (57% owned Yahoo), the kid who forced the Sox to trade Youkilis, has been unbelievable in the first half.  In limited ABs, he managed to hit 11 doubles and 10 HRs while driving in 37 and scoring 25 runs himself.  He sat the last 7 games of the first half but it was to prevent him from missing 15 days on the DL.  He is set to return after the break and should be on your roster!

Oakland Athletics - Fantasy Fillers

Hitters:
Another team that has come away with a steal in a trade, the A's acquisition of Josh Reddick (82%) for Andrew Bailey has been a break the A's have longed for.  At the break, Reddick has hit 20 long balls while driving in 43 runs and scoring 52!  Granted Reddick hit half of his HRs in May, Reddick has been hot again in July with 9 hits in 7 games including 5 doubles and 2 dingers.  Reddick's only issue is that no one else seems to get on base for the A's.  Reddick would have 60+ RBI on almost every other team.

Fantasy Baseball Week 14 (7/2-7/8)

7/8 - The Miami Marlins All-Star OF Giancarlo Stanton is set to have knee surgery and could miss at least 6 weeks.  The good news is that with the All-Star break this week fantasy owners will have plenty of time to pick through their options.  Justin Ruggiano (14% owned Yahoo) and Tyler Colvin (39%) have been the hottest hitters over the past week, outside of Mike Trout.

7/6 - Baltimore Orioles 2B Brian Roberts, who returned this season after suffering a concussion, has been diagnosed with a right hip labral tear.  If this requires surgery, it would probably be wise for Roberts to just retire.  Story

Ryan Howard is expected to return to the Philadelphia Phillies lineup tonight.  If you need to add Howard, just remember that like Chase Utley, he will not be playing everyday.  ADD TO YOUR ROSTER AT YOUR OWN RISK.

The Boston Red Sox have placed 2B Dusint Pedroia on the 15-Day DL with a torn adductor muscle in his thumb.  He played on Tuesday July 3, so Pedroia is not eligible to return until July 19th.  In the mean time, there are plenty of valuable options that most likely available in your league.  These are the 9 hottest hitters 2B eligible over the last 7 days:

7/5 - The Miami Marlins have acquired "El Caballo", 1B Carlos Lee from the Astros.  He should help a struggling Marlins offense that has A TON of offensive potential with Reyes, Bonifacio, Hanley and Logan Morrison.

Travis Hafner returned to the Indians lineup yesterday going 1 for 3 with 2 walks.  It was his first game since May 23.  He is just 6% owned in Yahoo leagues so if you are desperate for some power, give Hafner a chance.

7/3 - It is time to take Boston Red Sox 3B rookie sensation Will Middlebrooks out of your lineups for the time being.  He injured his hammy on Sunday and sat out Monday's game.  It is VERY likely that he is placed on teh 15-Day DL.  If you are one of the 66% of Yahoo owners, and would like to replace him for the time being, pick up Pedro Alvarez (35%) or Trevor Plouffe (72%).    STORY

Rafael Furcal Watch: Exits Game After Infield Single

It looks like Furcal was not seriously injured and was just removed for precautionary reasons.

San Diego Padres - Fantasy Fillers

Hitters:
Sure the Padres are last in runs scored and Slugging %, but they still do provide fantasy owners with multiple options to add to their roster.  Yasmani Grandal (11% owned Yahoo) has 6 hits in his first 6 games and 4 of them have gone for home runs!  Obviously no one can hit at that pace but Grandal is a career .313 minor league hitter and that should translate to a +.300 major league avg.  Any catcher that bats above .300 has a ton of fantasy value and most don't have the power that Grandal has shown.

New York Mets - Fantasy Fillers

Hitters:
The Mets offensive production has been somewhat surprising this season.  They are tied for 7th (Yankees) in runs scored with 384 yet only 5 teams have hit less home runs.  They have been patient at the plate and have capitalized on 2-out hits.  Ruben Tejada (10% owned Yahoo) has been the spark for the offense.  He has only played in 38 games but he is now hitting .329 with 24 runs scored and 13 2Bs.

Top 10 Hitters and Pitchers Over the Past 14 Days

Fantasy Baseball is all about having the hot bats and rubber arms.  Over the past two weeks guys like Will Middlebrooks and even Yuniesky Betancourt have been locked in and been some of baseball's hottest hitters.  Pitchers like Travis Wood and Rick Porcello have figured things out and made the art of pitching look easy.  Here is a list of the top 10 hitters and pitchers over the last 2 weeks who are less than 75% owned in Yahoo leagues.

Chris Nelson (Col - 2B,3B) 10%810402100058Mike Leake (Cin - SP) 12%24.0141360.50

Hitters:
  • Ike Davis, who has mastered the 3 run homer, has been hot as of late and scored 16 runs while driving in 24 in June.  The power is back and he walked more time in June than in April and May combined.  It is safe to say that We Like Ike!
    • Stay away from Chris Nelson.  In his first 73 ABs he had just 16 hits.  He had a ridiculous June going 25 for 77 (.325) but we see no reason for him to continue doing so and he CAN'T hit on the road (.215) compared to .314 at Coors Field.  If you NEED to play him, make sure the Rockies are home.

Pitchers:
  • One of my biggest mistakes this fantasy season was dropping Hiroki Kuroda.  On May 16, he allowed 7 earned runs and lost his 5th game of the season (3-5).  I had seen enough and was frustrated.  But it was too early to make such a move and I have missed on his 5-2 record since in 8 starts.  He has allowed 3+ earned runs just twice over that span and lowered his ERA from 4.50 to 3.17.  He has looked unhittable in his last two starts striking out 18 batters in 14 innings while walking just 3.
    • Keep away from Luke Hochevar.  Hochevar has 3 starts this season with 0 ER allowed yet his ERA still sits above 5 (5.23).  He has allowed 102 hits in just 93 innings pitched and the Royals are just 7-9 in his 16 starts this season.
