2012 Fantasy Football Tight End Rankings

End of NFL Regular Season Rankings
It's amazing that with only 10 games played, Rob Gronkowski still was the #3 TE.  Jimmy Graham and Tony Gonzalez were the only TEs to score more fantasy points than Gronk, but rookie Kyle Rudolph, & unknowns Dennis Pitta and Brandon Myers really made a name for themselves in fantasy land.  Veterans and fantasy favorites like Antonio Gates and Vernon Davis REALLY disappointing fantasy owners this season.  Heading into next season, if you do not have the pleasure of owning Graham, Gronk, or Aaron Hernandez (when healthy) there is no need to use one of your first 6 or 7 picks on a TE as the potential risk greatly outweighs the upside especially with the impending retirement of Tony Gonzalez.

TE Scoring Setting
  • Receptions - .5 points
  • Yards - 1 point ever 20 yards
  • Touchdowns - 6 points
  • 2pt Conversion - 2 points
  • Fumbles Lost - (2) points

The TE position was very weak this year with big names like Antonio Gates & Jermichael Finley not living up to their potential and new comers like Brandon Myers and Dennis Pitta really coming out of their shells.  Fantasy owners lost Aaron Hernandez early on and Fred Davis missed the entire second half of the season.  Ed Dickson and Dustin Keller (when healthy) have just taking up space on the field this year notching just 14 receptions.  Just imagine where Rob Gronkowski and fantasy owners would be if he had not suffered a broken arm during an extra point!  If he can somehow make it back this fantasy postseason it would be a Christmas Miracle!

PRESEASON

JASON WITTEN TO MISS THE REMAINDER OF THE PRESEASON WITH A SPLEEN INJURY

*Updates to be made all month
Yahoo Tight End Average Draft Positions
ESPN Tight End Average Draft Positions

Last season was a big one for tight ends in fantasy football.  8 TEs were Top 40 in Targets including Jimmy Graham, Jason Witten, and Dustin Keller who all lead their teams.  Rob Gronkowski caught the most touch downs in the NFL while 10 others caught at least 6 TDs (compared to just 7 the season before).  Tight Ends have become a focal point in a lot of offensive schemes and have proven to be extremely valuable commodities.  Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham finished with more fantasy points than all but 3 WRs, so if you are feeling risky and want to get the TE out of the way, those two guys are arguable worth a 2nd or 3rd round pick.  However, if you are not lucky/brave enough to land one of those two, you should have nearly all of your RB WR positions filled as well as a QB before looking to add a TE.

1.) Rob Gronkowski - New England Patriots
  • I seriously doubt last seasons ankle injury will prevent him from being the top dog again this season.  Gronkowski and Brady have developed a relationship on the field that has never been seen before between a QB and TE.  Gronkowski is nearly impossible to stop and week in and week out he proves that It's Gronk's World, We Are Just Living In It.
2.) Jimmy Graham - New Orleans Saints
3.) Antonio Gates - San Diego Chargers
4.) Vernon Davis - San Francisco 49ers
5.) Tony Gonzalez - Atlanta Falcons

6.) Brandon Pettigrew - Detroit Lions
7.) Jason Witten - Dallas Cowboys
8.) Aaron Hernandez - New England Patriots
9.) Dustin Keller - New York Jets
10.) Jermichael Finley - Green Bay Packers
11.) Jermaine Gresham - Cincinnati Bengals
12.) Ed Dickson - Baltimore Ravens
13.) Greg Olsen - Carolina Panthers
  • Head Coach Ron Rivera is telling the media that Olsen is an elite TE and without Shockey on the roster, should see an huge boost in stats in the Gronkowski, Jimmy Graham range.  Also, adding Mike Tolbert to the backfield allows Olsen to become a receiver instead of a primary blocker.  I like it!
14.) Fred Davis - Washington Redskins
15.) Martellus Bennett - New York Giants
  • Martellus Bennett will FINALLY get a chance to be a starting TE in the NFL.  He has not caught a TD since his rookie season 3 years ago and has just 85 catches in his career.  However, Eli Manning uses his tight ends and has made Kevin Boss and Jake Ballard valuable fantasy TE's before.  Bennett is a huge sleeper pick.

16.) Heath Miller - Pittsburgh Steelers
17.) Owen Daniels - Houston Texans
  • Daniels has to be one of the more over rated TEs in fantasy football.  He caught 60+ passes in back to back seasons and since then has been a highly drafted TE, even though he has yet to score more than 5 TDs in a season.  With the ground game Houston has developed and Andre Johnson getting 80% of Shaubs targets, Daniels is a big risk starting each week.
18.) Jared Cook - Tennessee Titans
19.) Jacob Tamme - Denver Broncos
20.) Kyle Rudolph - Minnesota Vikings
21.) Scott Chandler - Buffalo Bills
22.) Brent Celek - Philadelphia Eagles
23.) Dallas Clark - Tampa Bay Buccaneers
24.) Zach Miller - Seattle Seahawks
25.) Tony Moeaki - Kansas City Chiefs
26.) Kellen Davis - Chicago Bears
27.) Ben Watson - Cleveland Browns
28.) Coby Fleener - Indianapolis Colts
29.) Todd Heap - Arizona Cardinals
30.) Mercedes Lewis - Jacksonville Jaguars
31.) Kellen Winslow - Seattle Seahawks
  • It's a shame to see a top fantasy player drop to the bottom on these lists.  Even with 75 catches last season, Winslow scored just twice and has run himself off two teams.  He is now 2nd on the depth chart behind Zach Miller and in a run first offense with a terrible QB situation.  Unless Miller gets injured, which is actually highly likely, Winslow won't have any value early on in the season.
32.) Evan Moore - Cleveland Browns
33.) Lance Kendricks - St. Louis Rams
34.) Brandon Myers - Oakland Raiders
35.) Dwayne Allen - Indianapolis Colts
36.) Anthony Fasano - Miami Dolphins
