Early Waiver Wire Surprises

Yes it's only about 15 games into the MLB season but there are some players who are making a lot of noise on the field and you need to pay attention to them.

There are too many hitters who are really struggling offensively and it's only a matter of time before you have to make a decision whether or not to stay with them.

I want to make everyone aware of the non household names who are hitting and pitching well and list the players who are struggling.

Catcher:
  • Welington Castillo
    • .425 avg (17-40), 3R, 3 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI
      • 5 out of his last 8 games he has at least 2 hits.
  • Wilin Rosario
    • .326 avg (15-46), 6R,  4 HR, 13 RBI, 3 SB
      • Last year his 28 HRs were no fluke, this guy has serious power and already has 4 bombs in 12 games.
  • John Buck
    • .300 (15-50), 10R, 1 2B, 6 HR, 19 RBI
      • Got off to a very hot start and has begun to cool down. His average will continue to drop but the power is legit and will continue to hit the ball out of the park.
  • Nick Hundley
    • .318 avg (14-44), 6R, 6 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI
      • Hundley is really driving the ball this year as you can tell with his 6 doubles.
Catchers who are struggling - Alex Avila .163, Ryan Doumit .200, Buster Posey .213, Matt Wieters .229, Miguel Montero .234

First Base:
  • Chris Davis
    • .367 avg (18-49), 7R, 4 2B, 6 HR, 20 RBI, 9 BB
      • Got off to one of the best starts in MLB history but is still hitting .367 which is a good sign and has tremendous power.
  • Paul Goldschmidt
    • .357 avg (20-56), 11R, 5 2B, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 7 BB
      • This guy is the real deal. He's going to hit right around .300 and will hit 25-30 home runs.
  • Yonder Alonso
    • .309 avg (17-55). 6R, 3 2B, 2 HR,  8 RBI, 6 BB
      • Seems to be getting comfortable in San Diego and is beginning to hit like the player he was supposed to when he was called up.
1st Basemen who are struggling - Ike Davis .146, Allen Craig .231, Edwin Encarnacion .237

Second Base:
  • Daniel Murphy
    • .352 (19-54), 15R, 7 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 11 RBI
      • Murphy is absolutely crushing the ball and showing improved power hitting deep into the gaps.
  • Jose Altuve
    •  .365 avg (23-63), 6R, 3 2B, 1 HR, 8 RBI
      • One of the only Astros hitting the ball and is picking up right where he left off last season.
2nd Basemen who are struggling - Dustin Ackley .154, Dan Uggla .157, Danny Espinosa .175, Rickie Weeks .193, Neil Walker .250

Third Base:
  • Chris Johnson
    • .435 (20-46), 7R, 3 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI
      • 16 hits in his last 8 games. Have to ride the guy when he's hot!
  • Juan Francisco
    • .333 (14-42), 4R, 3 HR, 7 RBI
      • Splitting time with Chris Johnson but is making the most of his playing time and getting plenty of at-bats.
  • Michael Young
    • .327 (18-55), 5R,  2 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR,
      • Did you really expect anything less from Young? This guy will hit until he retires and no matter where he is playing.
3rd Basemen who are struggling - Pedro Alvarez .106, Kyle Seager .217, Mike Moustakas .178, Will Middlebrooks .182, Ryan Zimmerman .226, Adrian Beltre .232

Shortstop:
  • Jed Lowrie
    • .373 (22-59), 14R, 7 2B, 3 HR, 13 RBI, 8 BB
      • Fits perfectly in Oakland and is taking advantage of the big gaps in a huge stadium.
  • Jean Segura
    • .367 (18-49), 5R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 3 RBI
      • He will take advantage of hitting in front of Ryan Braun all year and will see plenty of pitches to hit.
  • Brandon Crawford
    • .352 (19-52), 12R, 4 2B, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 6 BB
      • Never been known for his bat but he's looking really good at the plate early on.
Shortstops who are struggling - Asdrubal Cabrera .113, Yunel Escobar .120, J.J. Hardy .182, Elvis Andrus .224, Jimmy Rollins .237

Outfield:
  • Chris Denorfia
    • .364 (16-44), 8R, 4 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 2 SB
      • A career .284 hitter so if he gets steady at-bats for the Padres then he will produce solid numbers.
  • Nate Schierholtz
    • .350 (14-40), 9R, 6 2B, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 2B
      • Splits time with Scott Hairston but as long as he continues to hit he'll play against most righties.
  • Starling Marte
    • .344 (21-61), 11R, 3 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 8 RBI
      • Currently on a 10 game hit streak. 19 hits in that span. Has only failed to reach base in 1 game this year.
  • Michael Cuddyer
    • .367 (18-49), 9R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 7 BB. 2 SB
      • Definition of a professional hitter and has great strength. Should have a monster year hitting in Colorado and behind Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki.
