Box Score Rundown

Last night the Houston Astros opened up the MLB season with an impressive 8-2 victory over the Texas Rangers.  Most of us assumed the score would look like that but that the Rangers would be victorious.  Looking at the box score, I see some things that I love and some things that I hate as far as fantasy baseball is concerned.

The 2-3-4 hitters in the Astros lineup are going to strike out a ton.  8 of their 16 ABs ended in a strike out and drew 0 walks.  Justin Maxwell deserves to be hitting 3rd in the Astors lineup.  Brett Wallace, Chris Carter and Carlos Pena should never bat back to back to back again.  Don't get me wrong, Maxwell is a strikeout machine as well, but he is probably their most dangerous hitter at the moment.  I hope J.D. Martinez gets his act together and returns to the middle of the Astros lineup!

Matt Harrison is NOT strikeout pitcher so his 9 Ks are an anomaly.  Do not expect more than 4 or 5 per start.  However, it is a good indicator of things to come for the Astros, and pitchers who are facing them.  Streaming low end pitchers against the Astros is good for extra strikeouts, but always has the potential to be a disaster as they can explode for 8 runs on any given night, just not consistently.

Bud Norris gave us exactly what we should expect, a quality start with a K/IP and a few walks jacking up his pitch count.  It's nice to see him giving up 6 singles and 0 XBH.  He and Lucas Harrell are the only Astros starters to own at the moment.

It is nice to see Lance Berkman getting 2 hits and David Murphy and Nelson Cruz will be consitant RBI guys in this Rangers lineup.

Matt Dominguez could turn out to be a consistant low end fantasy player in NL only and deeper mixed leagues.

Brandon Barnes and Rick Ankiel will be splitting a ton of ABs and if Ankiel gets going, he should see the majority of them.

Why Erik Bedard pitched out of the bullpen is beyond me and Jose Veras owners better hope that this new Astros piggybacking pitching philosphy doesn't ruin his value as a closer!
