The San Diego Padres got Chase Headley back last night as the Padres swept the Los Angeles Dodgers and beat Clayton Kershaw 7-2. Headley scored a run, drove in a run and reached base twice. Chase took over at 3B while Jedd Gyorko moved to 2B and Alexi Amarista was benched before entering in a double switch. Everth Cabrera picked up 3 hits including a double and home run, scoring twice while stealing his 4th bag.
Kershaw has now lost his last two starts and gave up 3 home runs to the Padres while walking 4 in 5.1 innings.
The Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners played 14 innings in one helluva pitching duel between Felix Hernandez and Max Scherzer. The two studs combined for 16 innings, allowing just 10 hits, 2 runs (1 earned) and 24 strikeouts (12 each). In total, the teams combined to strike out 40 times! Joaquin Benoit picked up the save for the Tigers in a 2-1 victory.
The San Francisco Giants scored 3 in the 7th inning to take the lead over the Milwaukee Brewers before Santiago Casilla came in to relieve Ryan Vogelsong and blow it. Vogelsong pitched 7 solid innings striking out 5 before Casilla gave up 4 hits and an earned run in 1.1 innings. Blake Lalli had a walk off pinch hit.
Hunter Pence picked up 2 of the Giants 3 RBI. Carlos Gomez had 3 straight 3 hit games as the Brewers swept the Giants.
Kyle Lohse made his third start for the Brewers and pitched 7 innings allowing 3 earned runs. He is just 0-1 on the season but has pitched very well for Milwaukee. The Brewers have scored 5 runs in his 3 starts.
The Toronto Blue Jays were shutout by Jose Quintana of the Chicago White Sox who pitched 6.2 innings striking out 7. Quintana has now pitched 13.2 innings in his last two starts without giving up a run and just 6 hits while striking out 14. I would say he is a MUST OWN in all league formats.
Ross Detwiler held the Miami Marlins to just 1 earned run over 7 innings as the Washington Nationals took 2 of 3 from Miami. Detwiler has now thrown 20 innings and allowed just 17 hits, 3 runs (2 earned), and 11 strikeouts to 3 walks. He is a groundball guy getting 36 groundouts compared to 29 flyouts. He also should be owned in all formats. In 14 starts last season he allowed more than 4 earned runs in just 2 starts.
The Oakland Athletics beat up on Bud Norris and I apologize for suggesting him as a streaming pitcher yesterdayy. He recorded just 2 outs before allowing 6 earned runs on 5 hits and 3 walks. SORRY!
Bartolo Colon is now 2-0 and the Athletics are 3-0 in his starts. He continues to scatter hits over his innings limiting damage and giving his team a chance to win each start.
Jose Altuve added 3 hits for the Astros and Seth Smith did the same for the A's.
The New York Yankees beat the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Bronx behind C.C. Sabathia, who once again pitched 8 stellar innings picking up his 3rd W, before Mariano Rivera came in to seal the deal, picking up his 4th save.
Brett Gardner added 2 more RBI out of the leadoff spot. He now has 8 runs batted in, the same as Travis Hafner, who hit his 4th home run of the season.
A.J. Burnett one hit the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Pittsburgh Pirates handed Shelby Miller his 1st loss of the season. Burnett struck out 8 more batters in 7 innings, giving him 35 Ks in just 24 innings!
The Cincinnati Reds swept the Philadelphia Phillies holding Philly to 4 runs over 3 games. John Lannan lasted 1.2 innings, allowing 6 earned runs on 8 hits, including a solo shot to Todd Frazier, his 4th. Zack Cozart added his 4th home run of the season as well.
Brandon Phillips had 2 hits and picked up 3 more RBI to give him 19 on the year.
Mike Napoli and Daniel Nava added 2 RBI for the Boston as the Red Sox improve to 2-0 since the Boston Marathon. They beat Justin Masterson, who was the early leader for the American Cy-Young award. Nick Swisher added 2 RBI for the Indians in the lose, and is finally heating up!
The Kansas City Royals beat the Atlanta Braves 1-0 with 8 singles and Wade Davis. Davis pitched 7 innings of 5 hit ball while striking our 7 Braves batters. Greg Holland picked up save #3 for the Royals, striking out the side. Mike Minor was great as well over 6 innings allowing 5 hits but gave up the only run the Royals would need. His ERA inflated to 0.95!
Matt Moore improved to 3-0 lasting 6.2 innings against the Baltimore Orioles, striking out 7. His only mistake lead to a 2 run home run off the bat of Adam Jones. Kelly Johnson hit his 3rd home run while Shelley Duncan hit his 2nd, both solo shots. Evan Longoria got another XBH and James Loney picked up 3 hits(2 2B) and 3 RBI.
The New York Mets vs Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Angels vs Minnesota Twins & Texas Rangers vs Chicago Cubs were all postponed.
