Justin Masterson Continues To Be Masterful

The Yankees and Indians played a double header in Cleveland this afternoon and they split. Each team won by shutout. In game 1 Justin Masterson threw a complete game shutout with 9 Ks, and the Indians won 1-0. Their only run came off the bat of Jason Kipnis, who hit a solo home run in the 1st inning. David Phelps suffered the loss, allowing just 1 run in 6 2/3 innings.

In game 2, the Yankees won 7-0, getting 5 shutout innings from rookie Vidal Nuno who went 5 only allowing 3 hits and Adam Warren went the final 4 innings allowing just 2 hits in relief. Lyle Overbay and Vernon Wells both scored a run and drove in 2. Trevor Bauer got the loss for the Indians, allowing 3 runs over 6 1/3 innings.

Justin Morneau went 3-5 with 2 doubles and 4 RBI to lead the Twins to a 10-3 win over the White Sox. Aaron Hicks contributed 2 solo home runs and Trevor Plouffe drove in 2 as well. Pedro Hernandez improves to 2-0 for the Twins as he allowed 3 runs over 5 1/3 innings.

Hector Santiago allowed 6 runs over 5 2/3 innings as he suffered the loss. Atop the White Sox lineup, Alejandro De Aza and Alexei Ramirez each picked up 3 hits. Alex Rios drove in 2 runs.

Travis Wood threw 7 shutout innings and he improves to 4-2 on the year with a 2.03 ERA as the Cubs beat the Rockies 9-1. David DeJesus, Starlin Castro, Alfonso Soriano and Nate Schierholtz all drove in 2 runs.

Juan Nicasio suffered his first loss of the year as he allowed 5 runs over 6 innings. Josh Rutledge provided the only offense for Colorado with a solo blast.

Andy Dirks powered the Tigers to a 7-2 win over the Astros as he went 3-4 with a double and a grand slam. Victor Martinez also hit a 2-run homer. Anibal Sanchez picked up his 4th win, striking out 8 batters over 7 innings. Bud Norris is now 4-4 after giving up 7 runs in 5 innings.

The Brewers got a great game from Norichika Aoki as they beat the Pirates 5-1. Aoki went 3-5 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored, 3 RBI and 2 stolen bases. Jean Segura who singled 3 times added 3 stolen bases. Marco Estrada picked up the win as he allowed 1 run over 7 innings.

A.J. Burnett is now 3-4 after giving up 4 runs in 7 innings. Pedro Alvarez had the lone RBI for Pittsburgh.

Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday went a combined 4-8 with 4 runs scored and 4 RBI as the Cardinals beat the Mets 6-3. Lance Lynn improves to 6-1 as he gave up 3 runs over 7 innings. For the Mets Daniel Murphy had 3 of the teams 4 hits and Scott Rice suffered the loss in relief.

Justin Upton, Brian McCann and Chris Johnson combined to go 9-12 from the plate with 2 doubles, 3 home runs, 5 runs scored and 8 RBI as the Braves beat the Diamondbacks 10-1. Mike Minor  picked up his 5th win of the year as he allowed 1 run over 6 2/3 innings. Wade Miley allowed 7 runs over 5 innings and falls to 3-2 on the year. Paul Goldschmidt provided the only offense for Arizona with a solo home run, his 10th of the year.

The Royals offense exploded for 19 hits as they beat the Angles 11-4. Luis Mendoza allowed 3 runs over 6 innings but got more than enough offense to earn his 1st win of the year. Billy Butler went 5-5 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored and 5 RBI. Alcides Escobar, Lorenzo Cain and Salvador Perez each had 3 hits. Despite the 19 hits, Mike Moustakas and Chris Getz went a combined 0-10 with 5 K's.  Joe Blanton was roughed up as he allowed 7 runs in 4 2/3 innings.

A.J. Griffin struck out 8 and allowed 1 run over 7 innings as he picked up his 4th win in a 5-1 Athletics win over the Rangers. The A's got RBI singles in the 2nd inning off the bats of Eric Sogard and John Jaso, solo home runs in the 3rd from Yoenis Cespedes and Brandon Moss and a RBI double in the 6th from Derek Norris. Justin Grimm allowed 5 runs in 5 innings as he suffered the loss. Mitch Moreland hit a solo home run which was the only run the Rangers scored.

Jordan Zimmermann picked up his 7th win as he allowed 2 runs in 7 2/3 innings. Ryan Zimmerman and Adam LaRoche went 2-9 in the game but drove in all 5 runs for the Nationals. Josh Beckett falls to 0-5 as he lasts just 3 innings allowing 4 runs.
