The Cininnati Reds scored 22 runs in a 3 game sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers, improving to 16-6 at home this season. Cincy did it with a complete team effort as they got home runs from Brandon Phillips, Jay Bruce, Donald Lutz and Xavier Paul. Bruce lead the team with 4 RBI this weekend and nearly everyone else chipped in 1, 2 or 3 runs batted in. Even Mat Latos picked up 2 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBI. Both teams walked a combined 27 times in the 3 games!
In the series opener, Yovani Gallardo and Tony Cingrani combined to go just 8 innings (4 each) allowing 0 hits and 5 runs. Ryan Braun and Jean Segura homered off Cingrani in the 4th inning. Shin-Soo Choo went 0 for 2 with 3 walks and 2 strike outs. Joey Votto and Todd Frazier also walked twice. Brandon Phillips hit his 6th homer and drove in RBI 30 and 31. Aramis Ramirez went 0 for 2 with 2 walks and 2 strike outs.
Game two was a disaster for Hiram Bugos, who got rocked in a start that lasted 3 innings, he allowed 11 hits, 12 runs, 10 earned and a home run. In that same start, Mat Latos gave up 7 runs, 6 earned over 6 innings and earned a victory. Jean Segura picked up 4 more hits in that one including his 6th home run! Norichika Aoki also homered for the Brewers. Six Reds had at least 2 hits and 2 RBI in a 13-7 victory.
Segura picked up 2 more hits in the series finale, giving him 8 hits, 2 doubles and 2 home runs, 4 runs scored and raising his average to .359. He was acquired in the deal that sent Zack Greinke to the Los Angeles Angels last season.
The Dodgers took 2 of 3 from the Marlins in LA, and Scott Van Slyke got his first start in the majors this year, giving Adrian Gonzalez the day off. Van Slyke has been atop the AAA Hitters list for two weeks now and blasted a solo home run while picking up 2 hits and 2 RBI. He did play some outfield in the minors, so he COULD give Andre Ethier some time off as he continues to struggle. NL only guys should really look to add him.
Ethier did go 4 for 4 in the second game of this series, but followed that up with an 0fer. He is hitting just .254.
Derek Dietrich also made his MLB debut his season, filling in at second base for the Miami Marlins. He went 4 for 11 with double and a homer picking up 3 RBI. He was a solid minor league hitter so he could also be a solid NL only player.
The Giants took 3 of 4 from the Braves in San Fran and improved to 15-7 at home. The Braves fall to 4-7 in the month of May. Julio Teheran beaet Ryan Vogelsong in the series opener, as Vogelsong continues to be terrible and saw his ERA rise to 7.78. It was all Giants from there on with Matt Cain beating Tim Hudson, Madison Bumgarner beating Paul Maholm and Tim Lincecum beating Kris Medlen. Medlen is now 1-5 but still owns a modest 3.44 ERA. Medlen has pitched well enough to win nearly all of his starts, but Atlanta has lost his last 5.
In game 1, Buster Posey and Brian McCann combined for 6 (3 each) of the 9 RBI in the game. They both added a 2 run homer. Posey had 5 hits, 5 RBI, 4 runs, 3 walks, 2 double and the homer to jump up and take over as the #1 Fantasy catcher, passing Carlos Santana.
Marco Scutaro picked up 2 hits in each of the 4 games, scoring 4 runs, hit a double, triple and home run and drove in 3 runs. In the last 10 days he raised his average from .240 to .305!
Dan Uggla went 0 for 4 with 4 strike outs in the second game against Madison Bumgarner, who struck out 11 Braves. Chris Johnson was a victim 3 times.
The St. Louis Cardinals shut out the Rockies twice this weekend taking 2 of 3 but the Rockies scored just as many runs as the Cards. Weird huh?
Shelby Miller and Adam Wainwright pitched back to back complete game shutouts, combining for 20 Ks. Jamie Garcia tried to complete the sweep but was hit hard for 5 runs over 6 innings. He did strike out 7 more Rockies and his ERA jumped to 2.88 from 2.25. Jorge de la Rosa also struck out 7 batters over 7 shut out innings for the Rockies in the win. When all was said and done the Cards and Rockies each scored 8 runs.
Troy Tulowitzki hit his 8th home run, a 3 run shot and now has 31 RBI and is the #1 SS in fantasy baseball.
Wainwright and Pete Kozma combined to go 0 for 8 with 7 strike outs during Wainwright's CG SO as the 8th and 9th hitters in the Cardinals lineup.
Charlie Blackmon got called up and debut Sunday going 2 for 4 with a home run, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. He can be added in all leagues as Michael Cuddyer was placed on the 15-Day DL with a neck injury.
Anthony Rizzo turned a hot May into a 7 year $41 mil extension, with the possibility for 9 years $73 mil! Rizzo raised his average to .280 this weekend in a series win over the Nationals in DC. The Cubs first baseman is just 23 so he is going to be a Cub into his 30's and into the 2020's!
In the second game of the series Edwin Jackson beat Stephen Strasburg and they now have the same record, 1-5! Strasburg picked up a lose in a game in which he surrendered no earned runs!
Jeff Samardzija also fell to 1-5 on the year and ERA has jumped up to 3.70.
The New York Mets lost 3 of 4 at home to the Pittsburgh Pirates and never scord more than 3 runs in a game. Jordy Mercer (2), Pedro Alvarez, Garrett Jones, Clint Barmes, and Jose Tabata all homered off Mets pitching. Anthony Recker, Jordany Valdespin, Andrew Brown and Lucas Duda homered for the Mets.
Jonathon Niese fell to 2-4 but his ERA was raised to 5.93 in an 8 run beating in just 4.1 innings. Shaun Marcum also pitched terrible for New York, and is now 0-3 with an 8.59 ERA. I doubt you see much more of him.
The Pirates beat the Mets in the 3rd game 11-2 and Mercer, Tabata, Michael McKenry and Barmes each had a multi RBI day.
