Cargo + Tulo = Colorado

The Colorado Rockies were crushing the ball last night at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati as they racked up 20 hits and scored 12 runs.  Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki lead the offensive barrage combining to go 8 of 10 with 9 RBI and 6 runs scored.  CarGo homered in the 1st, 4th and 8th innings while Tulo homered in the 3rd and 8th.  Just for fun, Todd Helton added a home run of his and showed these young studs that the old man still got it.  Nolan Arenando picked up 4 hits of his own scoring 3 times.  The hits were coming to the Rockies so easily that Jon Garland even had 2 of them in a winning start.  The Reds were actually winning this game 3-1 after the first inning thanks to a Xavier Paul 3 run homer.  Colorado ended up winning 12-4 thanks to three 3 run innings.  The Rockies took 2 of 3 from the Reds.

In two separate contests, Jason Marquis and Julio Teheran both had no hitters going into the 6th innings.  Marquis gave up his first of 3 hits in the 6th inning to Skip Schumaker who then scored on a double by Adrian Gonzalez who was the very next batter.  Marquis won his 7th game as the Padres beat the Dodgers 6-2 and avoided being swept in LA.  Yasiel Puig went hitless and struck out twice.  For Teheran he lasted until the 8th inning before Brandon Inge pinch hit and got the Pirates lone hit of the night.  Julio struck out 11 and lowered his ERA to 3.30 while winning his 4th start.  Since April 18th, Teheran has a 2.13 ERA over 8 starts, never allowing more then 3 runs and just once failing to complete 6 innings.  The Braves won 5-0 and swept the Pirates.  "Backup" catchers Evan Gattis and Gerald Laird provided home runs in support of their young prospect pitcher.  B.J. Upton actually walked 3 times in this one.

Wandy Rodriguez was the starting pitcher for the Pirates and left the game after getting a single out in the first inning.  His runner scored which allowed him to record a loss but the Pirates need him to be ok to stay competitive in the NL wildcard race.  The lefty suffered some tightness in his left forearm.

CC Sabathia tossed a complete game 7 hitter at home against the Indians in a 6-4 Yankees victory, completing the sweep.  Travis Hafner, Brett Garnder and Yan Gomes homered in this one.  It was 6-0 Yanks after 2 innings but the Indians made a push in the 6th and 7th scoring 4 runs.

The Chicago White Sox avoided by swept by the Mariners in Seattle with a 2 run 16th inning!  This game was 0-0 heading into the 14th inning, yes that is correct, before the Sox put up a 5 spot thanks to 2 walks, 4 singles and a double.  Then in the bottom of the inning, with 2 outs and the bases loaded, Kyle Seager hit a grand slam to keep the Mariners alive but it was short lived.  Gordon Beckham and Alex Rios had 4 hits each for the Sox, Seager, Kendrys Morales and Brendan Ryan had 3 hits for the Mariners.  Adam Dunn went 0 for 4 with 4 walks.  Kelly Shoppach and Michael Saunders combined to go 3 for 13 with 9 strike outs for Seattle.  Jason Bay had the worst line of them all going 1 for 8 with 3 Ks.

The Phillies completed a sweep of the Marlins with a 6-1 win.  Cole Hamels finally got that elusive 2nd win and is now 2-9 on the season with a 4.59 ERA!  Jacob Turner had a great start for the Marlins and got a ND lasting 6 innings with 4 hits, walks and strikeouts.  Marcell Ozuna, cleanup hitter for the Marlins, did little to help the Marlins prospect, going 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts.  To no ones surprise, Domonic Brown hit yet ANOTHER HR, his 18th, and now has 44 RBI.

The Red Sox and Rangers played to a rare pitching duel between Alexei Ogando and John Lackey.  The visiting Rangers managed just 7 hits while the Red Sox could only pick up 5.  The Rangers won 3-2 thanks to a Adrian Beltre homer and an Elvis Andrus 2 run double.  Dustin Pedroia also homered in this one and Mike Napoli's RBI double just wasn't enough for Boston.  Joe Nathan picked up his 18th save.

The Oakland Athletics won the rubber game in Milwaukee against the Brewers.  Bartolo Colon won his 7th game allowing 2 of the Brewers 9 hits in the 1st inning, including a Carlos Gomez triple that scored Jean Segura, the Brewers only run.  Seth Smith grounded out into a double play that scored Jed Lowrie and tied the game in the 5th.  Yovani Gallardo then gave up a 2 RBI single to Josh Donaldson and put men on base before being pulled in the 6th.  Brandon Moss hit a 3 run homer off Mike Gonzalez and gave the A's the 6-1 lead they won win the game wtih.

Matt Garza and Jason Vargas struggled in the 2nd game of a two game series in LA.  The Cubs avoided being swept with an extra innings 8-6 victory.  The two teams combined for 25 hits over 10 innings and 12 of the were XBH.  Alfonso Soriano hit 2 doubles for the Cubs and Mark Trumbo hit two TrumBOMBs for the Angels.  Cody Randsom (game tying 3 run homer in 5th) and Anthony Rizzo (game winning bases loaded double in teh 10th) had 3 RBI each for Chicago while Trumbo and Howie Kendrick had 2 a piece.

R.A. Dickey had his longest and best outting of the year going 8.1 shutout against the Barry Zito led SF Giants.  Dickey allowed just 2 singles and walked 2 while striking out 5.  Playing at AT&T Park in San Fran, Dickey was forced to bat, and helped his own cause with the go ahead RBI double in the 5th.  Jose Bautista would then drive home Dickey and Mark DeRosa would plate Joey Bats and Edwin Encarnacion for all of the Jays runs in the 5th inning.  They split a two game set.

Alex Cobb shutout the Detroit Tigers as the Tampa Bay Rays won 3-0.  Doug Fister pitched for the Tigers and the game was 0-0 in the 9th with Fister still on the mound before Matt Joyce, Evan Longoria and Desmond Jennings picked up an RBI each.  In the ND, Cobb lowered his ERA to 2.39.  Prince Fielder struck out 3 times while Miguel Cabrera went 0 for 2 with 2 walks.

Marlon Byrd's two home runs powered the Mets to a 10-1 win over the Nationals as Dillon Gee beat Dan Haren.  In Gee's last 14.1 innings he has allowed 13 hits, 2 earned runs and struck out 19 batters while walking just 1!  David Wright hit his 8th home run in this game, a two run shot in the 3rd.  Anthony Recker had 2 hits and 3 RBI for the Metsies.  The Nats scored their lone run in the 1st.

P.J. Walters lost a game in which he allowed 0 earned runs.  In 6 innings of work against the Royals, the Minnesota Twins pitcher allowed 7 hits and 3 walks but a throwing error by Pedro Florimon Jr. in the 1st inning allowed the Royals to score 3 unearned runs.  Jeremy Guthrie held the Twins to just a run over 6, picking up his 6th win and Greg Holland saved his 10th game striking out the side.  Josh Willingham had Twins only RBI while David Lough had 2 for the Royals on a 1st inning double.

The Houston Astros hit 6 home runs off Baltimore Orioles pitching and 7-1 in their last 8 games!  Matt Dominguez hit his 9th, Jason Castro his 8th, Carlos Pena and J.D. Martinez their 6th, Marwin Gonzalez his 4th and Jose Altuve his 3rd.  Dominguez had 3 RBI, Pena, Martinez and Castro had 2 and Altuve and Gonzlez hit solo jacks.  J.J. Hardy and Matt Wieters hit homers for the Birds.  Freddy Garcia allowed 4 of the Astros 6 home runs in his 3 innings of work.  Houston won by a final score of 11-7.

The Arizona Diamondbacks beat up on the St. Louis Cardinals bullpen, scoring 8 of their 10 runs in the final 3 innings, thanks to a Paul Goldschmidt grand slam in the 7th inning.  Joe Kelley started for the Cards and fell to 0-3 with a 5.55 ERA.  Wade Miley picked up his 4th victory for the DBacks.
