Just like the Chargers had to do, the 49ers were taken out of beautiful conditions in California and forced to go play in Green Bay, in blustery cold conditions. However they did avoid snow.
After winning the coin toss, the Green Bay Packers elected to receive the opening kickoff and get the ball into Aaron Rodgers hands.
The Green Bay fans hearts were ripped out early as Rodgers was sacked by Patrick Willis on just the 4th play of the game and was forced to leave the game with a chest injury. Backup Matt Flynn was brought in and the Packers were forced to punt after Jordy Nelson picked up 16 on a 4th and 17.
Frank Gore got the first three touches for the 49ers, as he picked up back to back first downs on an 11 and a 29 yard run, followed by a 18 yard screen pass. But on third down at the Green Bay 14, Colin Kaepernick was picked off by Morgan Burnett, as he overthrew Anquan Boldin on a slant route.
The status on Rodgers was up in the air as he suffered an abdominal strain, and he was considered questionable to return.
With Flynn under the center, the Packers decided to feed Eddie Lacy the ball over and over, however the 49ers knew this was going to happen and were able to force a quick punt.
San Francisco is beginning to get in rhythm on offense and move the ball into Packers territory as the first quarter comes to a close.
End of 1: 49ers 0 Packers 0
After Boldin drops what would have been a first down, Phil Dawson was called on to kick a 35 yarder, but missed as the ball hit the right upright. Kicking in windy conditions is never easy and you can tell the wind played a factor in the miss.
Matt Flynn put together an unbelievable drive, converting all 3 third downs, connecting with Randall Cobb, James Starks and Jarrett Boykin before he scrambled for 15 yards, setting up an 8 yard touchdown run by Eddie Lacy.
Gore continued to run all over this packers defense, picking up 20 and 37 yards on two different rushes on the drive that helped set up a 7 yard touchdown pass from Kaepernick to tight end Vernon Davis. Davis caught the ball at the 4 and tried to hurdle a defender, and almost ended up injuring himself as he was flipped into the endzone landing on his head. Regardless the 49ers tie it up at 7 with 1:45 left in the half.
As the Packers are moving the ball down into 49ers territory with under a minute to play, Flynn connected with wide receiver James Jones who was crushed along the sidelines by Tramaine Brock. James was down in pain and had to be helped off the field, as he favored his right arm. We later learned that Jones dislocated his shoulder and would be out for the remainder of the game.
However his 14 yard reception helped set up a Mason Crosby 28 yard field goal to end the half, giving the Packers a 10-7 lead.
At the Half: Packers 10 49ers 7
Green Bay continues to be solid on the defensive side of the ball as they force another punt by the 49ers.
As the Packers take the field for their first possession of the second half, Aaron led the offense out and the crowd absolutely erupted.
Showing no signs of injury, Rodgers throws a bullet to Boykin who breaks an Eric Reid tackle and takes it to the house for 42 yards, giving the Packers a 10 point lead.
Unable to get the offense moving, Kaepernick was sacked on third and 10 by Nick Perry, forcing yet another 49ers punt, and giving Rodgers a chance to add onto this lead late in the third quarter.
It looked as if the 49ers would get the ball back as they forced a third and 12, but Rodgers beautifully lobbed a pass down the field perfectly to Boykin for 32 yards. The Packers got all the way down to the 49ers 7 before Rodgers pass to Cobb was tipped at the line of scrimmage by Aldon Smith and picked off by NaVorro Bowman at the 3.
After 3: Packers 17 49ers 7
It took 10 plays for the 49ers to go 97 yards and make this a 3 point game. The drive was capped off by a 12 yard touchdown pass to Anquan Boldin. The 49ers would have been forced to punt, if it had not been for Vernon Davis. Kaepernick threw a jump ball for Davis who was double covered, but somehow came down with the ball to pick up 22 yards on third down. Davis seemed to be shaken up on the play but stayed in for the Boldin touchdown.
This 49ers defense came out energized after forcing a turnover that lead to a touchdown, as they force a 3 and out, giving the offense another chance to capitalize and potentially take their first lead of the game.
Moving the ball into Green Bay territory, the 49ers were able to tie the game as Dawson hits from 33 yards out with just 2:37 remaining in the game.
Facing a third and 10 at the 2 minute warning, Aaron Rodgers was able to connect with James Starks who cut towards the middle of the field, beating Patrick Willis and easily picked up the first down, picking up 15.
Aaron Rodgers and the Packers offense was able to tire out the 49ers defense, using 12 plays on the final drive that set up a potential game winning field goal by Mason Crosby.
After the Starks first down, Rodgers connected with Cobb for 10 yards on third and 3, and then on a gutsy call, Eddie Lacy picked up 4 yards on third and 3 from the 49ers 33 (would have made it a 50 yard field goal attempt). The Packers were able to pick up 10 extra key yards on runs by Lacy and Starks before the Packers called a timeout with 3 seconds left bringing on Mason Crosby, who drilled it from 37 yards out as time expired.
Final Score: Packers 20 49ers 17
