Le'Veon Bell - Lisfranc Injury

The Pittsburgh Steelers received some devastating news today, as rookie running back and most likely 1st stringer Le'Veon Bell will be sidelined with a Lisfranc injury.  Surgery or not, Bell is going to miss significant time (6-8 weeks) and is now UNDRAFTABLE!  If you have already drafted, make sure you are quick to grab Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman!

Outside of football, Lisfranc is a relatively uncommon injury. But football players (and soccer players) suffer from them more regularly. Benjamin Wedro, a physician who writes extensively about sports issues, called them a low-energy injury where a twist to the midfoot is added to a fall where the foot is plantar-flexed, or positioned like a ballerina on point. The same mechanism can happen in a pile-up if the foot is twisted when another player stumbles over top of it. - Mike Freeman, CBS

I guess we all know who you would rather have now!

20 Team League Draft Report Card

Despite a Powerful Set of RBs,
KeithyP Seems Headed for the Lower Tier

Draft Grade: C

Ouch. Despite selecting in the top half of the first round (sixth overall), KeithyP looks a little soft on paper. They're projected to finish 16th in 20 Team League with a record of 5-8-0 (1,026 points). With six WRs on the roster, KeithyP might have more quantity than quality at that spot; their WRs are projected to average 82 points this season, fewer than the league average of 87. They have the most prolific combo of RBs in the league, as they picked up Jamaal Charles and DeMarco Murray for their fantasy stable.

The Season Ahead

While Week 8 has the most players on bye for KeithyP (5), Week 5 is actually projected to have the team's highest amount of idle fantasy points. They have one of the most challenging slates in 20 Team League when factoring in opponents' projected points. Along with the fourth-most grueling overall schedule, both the first four games and last four games of the season are about league-average difficulty for KeithyP. KeithyP has a well-balanced schedule this season, avoiding prolonged stretches against either the projected top or bottom teams in the league.

Boys Making Noise in the Preseason

Every year, players dominate the preseason, but rarely do they make an impact in fantasy land. However, with so many teams running with a committee in the backfield and holding on to those extra receivers to spread the field, some of these guys might actually be able to help during the regular season.

Dodgers are 42-8 Since June 22

On June 21st the Los Angeles Dodgers owned a 30-42 record.  They had just lost their second straight game to the San Diego Padres and were 7-12 on the month.   What they have done since has happened just twice in the last 100 years.  LA split the 4 game series with the Padres, starting a 10-2 stretch over 12 games with a series sweep of the San Francisco Giants, taking 3 of 4 from the Philadelphia Phillies and then 2 of 3 from the Colorado Rockies.

Torrey Smith 77 Yard TD

Fantasy owners and Baltimore Ravens fans everywhere better hope Torrey Smith is used in routes like this more often!  This is how you utilize speed, get him the ball quickly and let him find the running lanes!  He will still get tons of shots down the field, but let's hope he gets 2 of these for every 1 deep ball.

NFC Bold Predictions

Well, well, well, here we are in the preseason with no regular season games played, but we all want Fantasy Football SO BAD. And we all love some bold predictions to laugh about, make fun of, and agree with, so lets go! Note: some of these might not be super "bold" but, are not expected to happen in the fantasy world by most analyst.

NFC South

Atlanta Falcons: Tony Gonzalez finishes outside the top 12 Tight Ends. Why? His touchdowns will decrease with the addition of Steven Jackson, and he is 37....

New Orleans Saints: This is the top 25 RB year for Pierre Thomas! In the past, the Saints have given every opportunity to succeed to former first round pick Mark Ingram. This year, the Saints want to establish the run to help Drew Brees and Pierre Thomas is their guy being listed #1 on their current depth chart.

Carolina Panthers: Cam Newton is fantasy's #1 QB. Now I know what you are thinking, that I am insane, but all Cam Newton had to do last season was throw for 24 touchdowns last season instead of 19. I don't know about you, but that seems quite possible to me.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Rookie Mike Glennon Scores more fantasy points than Josh Freeman. If Freeman stays inconsistent and loses games, the team may turn to the rookie Glennon, an efficient passer from NC State

20 Team Fantasy Football Draft Recap Pt.3

Yesterday, we continued to recap our 20 team fantasy football league draft.  Today we finish with rounds 11-15.

Knowshon Moreno kicked off the 11th round and along with Zac Stacy and Daniel Thomas were the only RBs picked in the round.  7 wide receivers were drafted here, including Kenbrell Thompkins, who is making waves around Patriots camp.  The lone QB selected in the round was E.J. Manuel who is almost a lock to be the starting QB for the Bills come Week 1.

In the 12th round Mario Manningham fell to the 19th pick, 239th overall!  If healthy, and that's a major if, he could be the 49ers top receiver this season with Michael Crabtree out for a while.  Anquan Boldin is the teams best receiver but Manningham could easily lead this team in receiving yards.  Being selected as the 77th WR, in a league that starts 60 each week, he could result in HUGE value here.

Fantasy Baseball 2nd Half Studs

Yesterday we looked at some of baseballs best who have struggled since the All-Star Break. Today, we focus on the positives and which players with the hot bats have been helping our fantasy baseball teams climb the standings! Guys like Justin UptonIke Davis and Martin Prado really hurt us in the first half, but since the Midsummer Classic have been filling up the box scores! Let's break this down position by position to get a better look at the reason your fantasy team has surged as of late!

Prospects Providing Production at Citi Field

The fans at Citi Field may not be harboring dreams of postseason glory for this season, but diehards that are in search of hope for the future should be excited at what they have recently been witnessing. In 25 games since the all-star break, the Mets have posted a 13-12 record while moving into third place in the NL East just 2.5 games behind Washington. This has largely been achieved on the backs of prospects looking to secure their place with the franchise. As the New York front office has its sites set on the future, lets take some time to see what these young players can deliver for your fantasy team in the present.

20 Team Fantasy Football Draft Recap Pt.2

Yesterday, we started to recap our 20 team fantasy football league draft.  Today we continue with rounds 6-10.

The 6th round saw owners spread their search to fill up their rosters as a little bit of everything was drafted, including 2 defenses!  With the 16th and 17th picks of the round, the Houston Texans and Seattle Seahawks were selected 116th and 117th ovearll.  6 WRs were also selected, as well as 5 TEs, 4 QBs and 3 RBs.  Carson Palmer was drafted as the 17th QB overall and could be a huge steal with Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd (also drafted in this round) as his weapons.

To start the 7th round, 3 TEs were selected in the first 5 picks, with Jermaine Gresham, Jared Cook and Brandon Pettigrew being the 12th, 13th and 14th TEs selected overall.  6 more running backs were selected, inclduing my personal favorite Vick Ballard.  The Chicago Bears were selected in the middle of the round.  Michael Vick and Joe Flacco were the only QBs selected in the round, and every team now has a QB.

Fantasy Baseball 2nd Half Slumps

Since the MLB All-Star Break, a bunch of important fantasy baseball players, have seen their seasons go downhill.  Prior to the All-Star Game, guys like Jean Segura, Gerardo Parra, Starling Marte and Manny Machado were leading fantasy owners to the top of their leagues.  But since the break, Segura just .247, Parra is hitting just .186, Marte just .194 and Machado just .228.  Let's break this down position by position to get a better look at the reason your fantasy team has struggled as of late.

20 Team Fantasy Football Draft Recap Pt.1

Last night, we hosted the second annual 20 team fantasy football league draft and we have some interesting results to talk about. The draft started at 8:30pm EST with Adrian Peterson going 1st overall. What followed was insane...Drew Brees with the #2 overall pick! Brees was one of two QBs drafted in Round 1, with Aaron Rodgers going 12th overall. Doug Martin and Arian Foster followed Brees, with Calvin Johnson jumping off the draft board at #5. In total, 14 running backs were drafted in the 1st round with 4 WRs, 2 QBs and 1 TE, Jimmy Graham at #20.

Graham's owner followed up with Brandon Marshall to start round 2 and would not draft its 1st RB until pick #100 at the end of the 5th round with the Law Firm BenJarvus Green-Ellis. Round 2 continued with 8 of the first 12 picks being WRs and just 6 running backs in total were drafted. By the end of round 2 just 4 teams had drafted BOTH their starting running backs. There were 6 RB/WR combinations and 5 RB/QB combos. Colin Kaepernick ended up being the 3rd QB selected overall with the 28th overall pick in the 2nd round.  He was selected 3 picks ahead of Cam Newton and 5 before Peyton Manning. Matt Ryan and Tom Brady would also be drafted by the end of the 2nd round.

Boys Making Noise in the Preseason

Every year, players dominate the preseason, but rarely do they make an impact in fantasy land. However, with so many teams running with a committee in the backfield and holding on to those extra receivers to spread the field, some of these guys might actually be able to help during the regular season. Do not draft any of these guys, but keep an eye on them.

E.J. Manuel (BUF) - 16/21 107 yards 1 TD 28 rushing yards on 3 attempts, 24 long
  • I did not watch the game, just saw the highlights, but from what I am hearing, Manuel looked great.  His stats aren't anything special, but critics liked his game.  Good way to start to his career!
Kirk Cousins (WSH) - 6/7 52 yards TD
  • Everyone has their eyes on RGIII this season and if he can't stay healthy, Cousins will be a hot commodity!
T.J. Yates (HOU) - 13/21 151 yards TD
Case Keenum (HOU) - 13/18 125 yards TD
Matt Cassel (MIN) - 12/19 212 yards TD/INT

Fantasy Football Handcuffs

Fantasy Football drafts are taking place daily, and fantasy owners everywhere are already planning on what to do in case of an injury.  We look at all 32 NFL teams and breakdown their RB situations.  Some teams still have a go to guy, while others will go with the running back by committee.

Injury Risk - INJ
Not So Good - NSG
Split Carries - 50/50
Touches Vulture - VUL
Offensive Weapon - PPR

Aricona Cardinals
Mendenhall had 3 good season in a row from 2009-11 rushing for 3309 yards and 29 TDs. But he now joins an Arizona Cardinals offense with a terrible offensive line, and plays the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers 4 times. The Cardinals were dead last in rushing yards last season and have had just 2 1,000 yard rushers over the last 6 seasons. Ryan Williams is the better running back and if he proves healthy could take over again as the teams starting back. Either way, avoid all Cardinals running backs unless you play in a very deep league, or injuries ruin your fantasy team.

ESPN Gridiron Challenge - Player Eliminator

Gridiron Challenge, our salary-cap based game, is back for 2013, but with a handful of new changes and wrinkles that should add to the weekly fantasy football fun. The game itself is relatively simple: Build a roster of one quarterback, two running backs, two wide receivers, a tight end, a kicker and a team defense/special teams, and get points for their performances. And compared to our usual fantasy football scoring, offensive players won't get penalized for turnovers, like interceptions or fumbles. As for the team defenses/special teams, they can be penalized for giving up too many points; however, they will earn you five fantasy points for a real-life win.

We now have a second option for Gridiron Challenge that's sort of a player-based version of our Eliminator game. In this format, you build a roster as noted above, but once you use a player in a given week, you can't use him the rest of the season (i.e. You won't get any points for him in subsequent weeks). There is no salary cap involved in this game, so you can load up on all the superstars you want in any given week. However, you just can't use them the rest of the way. As the weeks go by, the pickings can get a little slim, so some advanced planning and research could be in order as you figure out when to use the superstars and when to wait. Investigating matchups can go a long way in succeeding in this format. Thankfully, you can try out both options, and there are prizes for the top winners in each format. So good luck and build out the best roster you can!

Click here to join our group on ESPN!

Each week we will have a post with that weeks suggestions and will be a great place to come and ask all of your questions and either hotdog about your weekly sleeper or cry about the previous weeks mistakes! Feel free to invite friends to the league on your own!

12 Team Mock Draft on CBS

I tried to snag the #3 draft pick, but was seconds late and had to settle for the 10th pick. Based on CBS rankings, I would have ended up with Alfred Morris, but Drew Brees was selected 2nd overall after Adrian Peterson! Doug Martin was next off the board and Arian Foster fell to "the rons" who drafted 4th, a VERY nice surprise should this happen in an actual draft. 5 running backs went next including Morris, but Trent Richardson was skipped and I choose him over LeSean McCoy. I can't trust that Eagles offense without Maclin, a new HC and a very unstable QB situation. Had it been between McCoy and Morris, I would have drafted Shady.

Lend Tyson an Ear

Tyson Ross was drafted out of the University of California, Berkeley by the Oakland Athletics in the 2nd round of the 2008 amateur draft. The former Golden Bear bounced around various levels of the A's farm system before making his big league debut on April 7, 2010 versus Seattle. From 2010-2012, the young hurler mostly struggled through 53 appearances (21 starts) for Oakland compiling a 6-18 record with a 5.33 ERA and 1.60 WHIP.

The now 26 year old was sent to San Diego as part of a four player trade on November 16, 2012. The move to the more desirable climate of southern California has been a favorable one for the Bay Area native. In 25 games (6 starts) for the Padres this season, Ross is sporting a 2.91 ERA and 1.22 WHIP while holding opponents to a .223 batting average.

Fantasy Football Sleepers

Ryan Tannehill - Miami Dolphins

Clearly, Tannehill should not be a starting QB in a 10, 12 or even a 14 team league. But if you play in 2 QB formats, or if injuries knock out a QB or 2 this season, Ryan Tannehill could be extremely valuable. 3 QBs above him are Michael Vick, Ben Roethlisberger and Sam Bradford. Vick could lose his job any week, Big Ben has no offensive line and Sam Bradford, lets be honest, he is not what the Rams were looking for. Tannehill has Mike Wallace and Brian Hartline lining up wide, with Dustin Keller in the middle. Those are 3 solid targets and as mentioned in our Brian Hartline PPR Gold post, these two already have a nice chemistry. Anthony Fasano caught 41 passes for 5 TDs last season, so there is no reason to not trust Dustin Keller to do that plus some. Let's not forget, Keller caught 110 passes for over 1500 yards and 10 TDs from Mark Sanchez over a two year period! Then you have Mike Wallace, the deep threat the Dolphins were missing last season. Tannehill attempted just 45 passes 21+ yards down the field last season. Not because he can't but because the Dolphins had no one capable of running that route. Mike Wallace is going to change the game for Ryan and the Dolphins.

QB Rankings

Desmond Jennings Broken Finger

The Tampa Bay Rays will be without their center fielder and leadoff hitter, Desmond Jennings, for at least the next two weeks. Test results showed a small break in Jennings finger and there is no timetable for his return. Jennings has yet to reach his full potential and has been more of a let down than anything else since Carl Crawford left the Rays for the Boston Red Sox. Desmond was supposed to give the Rays what Crawford did, but has managed to hit just .252 in the Majors. He has hit 40 extra base hits this season which is 1 more than all of last season, and in 90 less at bats. But Desmond was struggling since the All-Star Break with a .203 average and 20 strikeouts in 59 at bats. If Jennings can ever put it all together, placing him atop the order with Wil Myers, Ben Zobrist and Evan Longoria batting behind him, there is no telling just how good the Rays can be. See the Biogenesis Suspensions post for outfielders you can replace Jennings with!

Biogenesis Suspensions

As far as real life goes, this story revolves around Alex Rodriguez. Considering he hasn't played a game all season long, we couldn't give two hoots about ARod. We are focusing on the players being suspended that will impact Fantasy Baseball and the upcoming Playoffs!

Bartolo Colon, Melky Cabrera, and Yasmani Grandal will not face further punishment, as they had already served 50-game suspensions for failing drug tests. Washington's Gio Gonzalez and Baltimore's Danny Valencia, despite being mentioned in early Biogenesis reports, have been cleared of wrongdoing by MLB's investigation. - Deadspin

The biggest name on this list is Nelson Cruz. A middle of the lineup hitter, who is currently ranked 36th overall, 30th amongst hitters and the #12 overall outfielder. His 27 home runs and 76 RBI can not be found on the free agent list, but below we have a couple of options that are swinging a hot bat.

David Wright Watch: 15 Day DL

The New York Mets appear to be preparing to play without their Captain, David Wright for the rest of August. This injury most likely happened earlier in the week, but David tried to play through it and here we are!

Wright will have an MRI on Saturday. “Most likely not all that good,” Terry Collins said after the game. - MetsBlog

Fantasy Football - CBS ADP Mock Draft

This is the final installment of the Fantasy Football Average Draft Position Mock Drafts. We started two weeks ago with ESPN, ran through Yahoo last week and bring you the CBS results today. As with the other drafts, I removed Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez and now Percy Harvin, Jeremy Maclin & Dennis Pitta as these guys should no longer be drafted due to injury.

For the first time, we got a WR/QB combo from Team 9 (Calvin Johnson & Drew Brees). I guess if you are going to go that route, this is the way to go! However, we still do not suggest doing this because Team 9 was left with Frank Gore and Darren McFadden as their RBs. Not terrible choices but McFadden is the 2nd to last RB drafted for a reason! That being said, CBS owners do tend to gravitate towards the RB/RB combo as 6 teams end up with 2 backs after 2 rounds. We saw that happen just 4 times in ESPN and 3 in Yahoo. Team 8 selected the only other QB in the first 2 rounds combining LeSean McCoy with Aaron Rodgers. A.J. Green and Dez Bryant joined Megatron as the only receivers drafted in the top 20.

As teams are shifting to running back by committees, the stud backs are slowly diminishing!  Grab them while you can!  Don't be silly and draft your QB or WR or TE in the first two rounds!  After the jump we break down each round and discuss the MANY available QBs and WRs which will help you understand why there is no need to rush into drafting a player of that position!

Fantasy Baseball - July Fireworks

Torii Hunter used a 4 for 5 day in the last game of July to finish with a .374 average, 22 RBI and 21 runs scored in 23 games. He hit 7 doubles, 2 triples and 7 home runs to get there and jumped up the OF rankings to #11. Hanley Ramirez has hit the cover off the ball since returning from the DL and sparked a run by the Dodgers that led to a 19-6 record in the month of July. HanRam used 17 XBH to jump up the WEAK SS rankings and in just 51 games played is 21st overall, thanks to being top 5 in home runs and top 15 in doubles.

Speaking of returning from injury, David Price pitched 3 complete games in July finishing 5-1 with a 1.68 ERA. His teammates Chris Archer and Matt Moore combined to go 8-0 over 10 starts and the Rays finished 21-5 and sit just .5 game behind the Red Sox in the AL East. Tampa Bay will be without Moore for the next two weeks with left elbow soreness. An X-Ray revealed no serious damage so he should return on schedule.
