Just like the Chargers had to do, the 49ers were taken out of beautiful conditions in California and forced to go play in Green Bay, in blustery cold conditions. However they did avoid snow.

After winning the coin toss, the Green Bay Packers elected to receive the opening kickoff and get the ball into Aaron Rodgers hands.

The Green Bay fans hearts were ripped out early as Rodgers was sacked by Patrick Willis on just the 4th play of the game and was forced to leave the game with a chest injury. Backup Matt Flynn was brought in and the Packers were forced to punt after Jordy Nelson picked up 16 on a 4th and 17.

Frank Gore got the first three touches for the 49ers, as he picked up back to back first downs on an 11 and a 29 yard run, followed by a 18 yard screen pass. But on third down at the Green Bay 14, Colin Kaepernick was picked off by Morgan Burnett, as he overthrew Anquan Boldin on a slant route.

The status on Rodgers was up in the air as he suffered an abdominal strain, and he was considered questionable to return.

With Flynn under the center, the Packers decided to feed Eddie Lacy the ball over and over, however the 49ers knew this was going to happen and were able to force a quick punt.

San Francisco is beginning to get in rhythm on offense and move the ball into Packers territory as the first quarter comes to a close.

Jacksonville Jaguars Let Maurice Jones-Drew Walk

Maurice Jones-Drew will hit the free agent market this NFL offseason and fantasy owners everywhere should get excited!  The 5'7 running back is 28 years old and still has some years left.  From his rookie season in 2006 until 2011, he rushed for 6854 yards, including 3 straight 1000+ seasons.  He scored 62 rushing touchdowns over that span and caught 278 passes for 10 more scores, totaling 72 TDs over 6 seasons!  Then in 2012 he played in just 6 games and this season averaged just 3.4 yards per carry, but did score 5 times.  The Jacksonville Jaguars are terrible and getting MJD out of there is great news.

But where will he go?  The NFL is littered with a few elite backs, and numerous running back by committees (RBBC).  Well there is one team in desperate need of an every down back and that is the Cleveland Browns.  But let's pretend like they dont' exist because he might as well stay with the Jaguars if he signs in Cleveland.  The Oakland Raiders are an interesting fit as he did go to UCLA, and Darren McFadden is going to be a FA as well.  However, at this point in MJD's career, you would have to imagine he wants to play for a winning team.

Coming from beautiful sunny San Diego, the Chargers are forced to play in a brutally cold 18 degrees with light snow falling in Cincinnati, creating slippery conditions on the field. After winning the coin toss, the Chargers will let the Bengals start with the ball.

The Bengals came out hot, proving the cold and snow won't slow them down at all. They go 75 yards on 7 plays, with an A.J. Green 21 yard tip toe catch along the side of the end zone capping off the drive.

On the very first play for the Chargers, Vontaze Burfict laid a big hit on Ryan Mathews, causing the ball to come flying loose but the Chargers were able to recover it and avoid a total disaster start on the road.

Carlos Dunlap gets a huge sack on Philip Rivers on third down, causing a Chargers 3 and out.

Despite allowing a 22 yard pass to Green that put the Bengals into Chargers territory, San Diego's defense held Cincy to just a field goal as Mike Nugent connects from 38 yards out to give the Bengals a 10-0 lead.

Again, on third down the Bengals brought the pressure and hit Rivers as he threw, resulting in an incomplete pass and forcing another punt from the Chargers.
The quarter, which was completely dominated by the Bengals comes to an end as the Bengals pick up another first down and are now in Chargers territory.

Playing in front of their hometown fans, the Eagles decide to receive and try to get their offense going right out of the gate and start at their own 31.

The offense was soaring on their opening drive, going 10 plays for 69 yards, capped off by a 1 yard touchdown run by LeSean McCoy to give the Eagles an early 7-0 lead.

As good as the Eagles offense was, their defense came out flat as the Saints run game marched right down into Eagles territory. However Brandon Boykin, who picked off Kyle Orton to end the Cowboys season, picks off Drew Brees, after the ball tipped off of Marques Colston's hands.

Nick Foles and the Eagles took full advantage of getting another opportunity to add on to their early lead. After a 27 yard run by McCoy put the Eagles deep into Saints territory, Foles found rookie Zach Ertz wide open in the back of the end zone for an easy touchdown, giving the Eagles a 14-0 lead.

Playing on the road, the Chiefs won the coin toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff.

After back to back Jamaal Charles runs to start off the game, Alex Smith was intercepted on his first pass he threw, giving the Colts great field position at the Chiefs 24. The Chiefs defense forced the Colts to settle for an Adam Vinatieri 34 yard field goal.

In what looked like another disaster for the Chiefs, facing 3rd and 16 from their own 14, Alex Smith connected with Dwayne Bowe for 22 yards picking up the first down. The Chiefs marched all the way down the field, handing the ball off to Jamaal Charles from the Colts 6.  He fumbled at the 3 and it was recovered by the Colts.

Al Horford Out Indefinitely - Torn Pectoral

Shortly after news broke about Russell Westbrook and his knee injury, an MRI revealed a torn pectoral for Atlanta Hawks center Al Horford.  Both have a huge impact in real life and fantasy basketball, but for us fantasy players, replacing Horford might be more difficult than finding a replacement for Russell.

This is Horford's second pectoral injury in 3 season, as he missed 55 of the Hawks 66 games in the 2011-2012 lock out season.  This season, Horford is averaging a career high 18.6 points on 57% shooting and 1.5 blocks, but his rebounding is down to just 8.6 per game.  The Hawks replaced Josh Smith with Paul Milsap, and have been playing at a level not many expected, jumping out to a 16-13 start in a WEAK Eastern Conference.  Losing Horford is going to cause a big problem for Atlanta, if they expect to continue to play at such a high level without trading for a replacement.  Pero Antic and Gustavo Ayon just won't cut it.

OKC Thunder Lose Russell Westbrook

The Oklahoma City Thunder and fantasy basketball owners everywhere were prepared to be without Russell Westbrook prior to the start of the NBA season.  Miraculously, he played 25 of the teams first 28 games and OKC got off to a hot start, winning 23 games.  But Westbrook must have rushed his return, as he will be out until the All-Star break after knee surgery.

Russell looked 100% healthy this season averaging 23.3 points, 7.6 assists, 6.5 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game!  Reggie Jackson will once again be a must own fantasy player.

End of 2013 Fantasy Football Season - Quarterback Rankings

No position in fantasy football dominates the way the QB position does, and dominant Peyton Manning was.  Manning led all QBs in completions, Yards and TDs, earning the triple crown.  Philip Rivers and Andy Dalton in the top 5 are the biggest surprises here.  Rivers had his best season yet, with just 3 interceptions to 12 touchdowns over the San Diego Chargers last 7 games,  and Andy Dalton led the Cincinnati Bengals to an AFC North division title.

Nick Foles finished the season as a top 5 QB, but only got 10 starts thanks to Michael Vick.  Foles scored 27 TDs in those 10 starts and matched Peyton's 7 TD game from Week 1 in Week 9.

Tom Brady's fantasy value plummeted without Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez and Wes Welker and owners questioned starting him week in and week out.

Matt Ryan owners had tough decisions to make as well after Julio Jones was lost for the season.  Speaking of lost for the season, Sam Bradford had thrown 14 TDs and just 4 INTs before suffering a season ending injury in Week 7.  Aaron Rodgers and Jay Cutler spend a lot of Sunday's on the sideline, but thankfully Josh McCown had great success starting for the Chicago Bears.  Scott Tolzien and Matt Flynn?  Not so much.

Overall the QB position was a big let down and guys like Robert Griffin III and Eli Manning had owners scrambling on a weekly basis to start a QB with a good matchup.  That was also what was missing from the QB position this season...scrambling.

End of 2013 Fantasy Football Season - Running Back Rankings

With the value placed on RB this fantasy draft season, its easy to say we were let down.  Doug Martin, David Wilson, and Ahmad Bradshaw all suffered season ending injuries, while C.J. Spiller (Fred Jackson finished all his drives), Ray Rice, Trent Richardson (couldn't get things going even after being traded to the Colts), and Steven Jackson (saved his season after week 12, with all 6 of his rushing TDs) stunk up the joint.  We did have eleven 1,000 yard rushers, led by LeSean McCoy's 1476, but just 7 RBs totaled 10 or more scores.  Jamaal Charles scored 19 times, which was 6 more than 2nd best Marshawn Lynch with 13.  As expected it was a New Orleans Saints RB that led the league in receptions, but it was Pierre Thomas and not Darren Sproles

Rookie Eddie Lacy took home the RB rookie of the year award, with 1112 rushing yards, 10 rushing TDs and even added 33 catches.  Would love to see him get 16 games with Aaron Rodgers under center!

3 other rookie running backs finished inside the top 20 and none of them were named Montee BallKnowshon Moreno made sure Ball wasn't going to see the field this season.  Giovani Bernard, Le'Veon Bell and Zac Stacy proved they were NFL ready.

Stacy rushed for the most yards of the three, and totaled 8 scores, but his 22 catches kept him from ranking higher in our PPR league.

Bernard also scored 8 times and even though he rushed for just 673 yards (splitting time with BenJarvus Green-Ellis) he put in work in the Cincinnati Bengals air attack, catches 51 passes.

In just 12 games, Le'Veon Bell rushed for 770 yards and scored 7 TDs while catching 44 passes for the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Can't wait to get this guy for 16 games next season!

End of 2013 Fantasy Football Season - Tight End Rankings

End of Fantasy Football Rankings

There was so much hype this preseason surrounding Jordan Cameron (read the preseason stuff on Cameron and know that he did not fail to live up to the hype) that I somehow managed to leave Julius Thomas off the preseason rankings!  Now I am not saying I would have given him a top 15 billing but he deserved to be on this list.  His 60 receptions ranked 9th but Jimmy Graham's 81 catches was the most any TE had so this was not a year for Tight Ends.  Graham was also the only TE to eclipse 1000 yards and 1 of just 3 to catch at least 10 TDs.  Thomas and Vernon Davis each caught 12.  However, there were some young guns who made waves this season, thanks to injuries and red zone targets.
Joseph Fauria caught 46% of his passes for TDs!  Well he only had 15 catches but he caught 7 of them in the endzone!  The Detroit Lions has played Brandon Pettigrew on IR so Week 17 could show us if Fauria could be used as an everyday TE.  Charles Clay stepped in for the injured Dustin Keller and caught 65 passes for 716 yards and 6 TDs.  Keller had signed a one year contract with the Miami Dolphins so the TE position is all Clay's for the foreseeable future.

Coby Fleener took over ful time for the Indianapolis COlts when Dwayne Allen went down with a season ending hip injury.  Fleener caught 51 passes for 583 yards, but scored just 4 TDs.  Who knows how that situation will playout next season as Allen is the better blocker.

Zach Sudfeld was getting Cameron type hype with Rob Gronkowski injured and Aaron Hernandez in jail, but it wasn't soon before long the New England Patriots cut him and he landed in fantasy football hell, with the New York Jets.

End of 2013 Fantasy Football Season - Wide Receiver Rankings

End of Fantasy Football Rankings

Calvin Johnson proved once again he is the best of the best when it comes to WRs in the NFL.  He only needed 84 catches for his league leading 12 TDs and finishes second best with 1492 yards.  Only Josh Gordon gained more yards with 1564 (on just 80 receptions).  We only ranked 5 of the top 10 in our preseason top 10, but Josh Gordon really exploded this season, while missing the first 4 games and catching passes from Brian Hoyer, Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell

Antonio Brown became Ben Roethlisberger's go to and really proved the Steelers right in letting Mike Wallace sign on with the Miami Dolphins.  Alshon Jeffery became the Chicago Bears 1a WR and played better with Josh McCown than Jay CutlerDeSean Jackson turned it on once Nick Foles took over for the Philadelphia Eagles.  Jackon's teammate, Riley Cooper, was a spotlight in the offseason for a non football related issue, but had a breakout season in Chip Kelly's offense that proved to be NFL ready.

Keenan Allen took home the top rookie WR and even though he fell to the San Diego Chargers in the 3rd round of the NFL draft, everyone knew he had 1st round potential.  The Cincinnati Bengals got two WRs in the top 21 thanks to A.J. Green being who he is and Marvin Jones making the most of his 49 catches, scoring 9 TDs.

Brian Hartline finished in the top 25, and we mentioned before the season began that he could be a huge PPR player, that can be drafted in the late rounds!

Injuries to Julio Jones, Reggie Wayne and Randall Cobb really hurt a lot of us fantasy owners this season. Hakeem Nicks might as well have been injured this season, he didn't score a single touchdown!

Fantasy Football Playoffs MVPs - Tight Ends

Tony Gonzalez still has one more football game to be played, but he is done being our favorite fantasy football tight end since the 1999 season.  Gonzalez left fantasy as the TE MVP this playoff season ranking 14th, 5th and 1st.  Thank you Tony G, you will be forever missed and you were the model of consistency at a position that you made the focal point of offensive around the NFL!

Six other TEs made the cut, and two of them did not even score a single touchdown!  That is how poorly TEs performed this postseason.

Next on the list was not Jimmy Graham (who failed to make the cut) or even Julius Thomas, but Marcedes Lewis!  The Jacksonville Jaguars TE caught a TE in all 3 weeks.

Julius Thomas was 3rd, finishing just slightly ahead of Tim Wright.  Thomas never got to be the #1 TE of any week like Wright was in Week 15, but he finished 9th, 23rd and 2nd to get him in ahead of the young Buc.  Thomas caught just 2 more passes than Wright but gained 32 more yards and they both caught 2 TDs.

Mychal Rivera, Matrellus Bennett and Greg Olsen were the only other TEs to rank in all 3 weeks.  Olsen caught 16 passes for 163 yards, Bennett hauled in 16 for 199 but neither caught a TD.  Rivera was able to score in Week 14 giving him a 10th place finish that week and a TD in Week 15 ranked him 11th.

Fantasy Football Playoffs MVPs - Quarterbacks

The QB position was so up and down the entire season, outside of the one and only Peyton Manning.  There was more proof of that this fantasy football playoffs when Josh McCown and Ryan Fitzpatrick took home #1 rankings during weeks 14 and 15 respectively.  But Peyton took home the honors when it mattered most, during championship weekend.  Andy Dalton was the only QB besides Manning to rank in the top 5 twice, finishing 5th and 2nd in weeks 14 and 16.

Peyton tossed 10 touchdowns over the 3 week playoffs, passing for 1086 yards and completing 98 passes.  Let's not forget Wes Welker did not play in those last 2 contests!

To many surprise, Andy Dalton finished second, ahead of Drew Brees and Nick Foles.  Dalton was actually one of the best QBs all season long, but this playoff season he completed 76 passes for 871 yards and 9 TDs.  Brees' 99 completions was most amongst QBs but those 987 yards only resulted in 6 TDs.  Foles completed even less passes than Dalton (62) but he was able to add a rushing TD on top of his 6 passing TDs.

Then we come to Andrew Luck, who before the playoffs had not thrown for multiple TDs since a November 3rd game against the Houston Texans in Week 8!  Luck ended up tossing 7 scores, 4 in Week 14, completing 74 passes for 747 yards.

The list wraps up with likes of Tom Brady, Tony Romo, Matt Ryan, Matt Flynn, Chad Henne, Colin Kaepernick, Philip Rivers and Cam Newton.  Lots of high profile QBs who sometimes barely managed to be a top 25 QB during the playoffs.

2013 Fantasy Football MVPs and Busts

These MVP awards are not like the awards that are given out by the NFL. To win a fantasy football MVP the player must be consistent during a majority of the season, and comes up big during the fantasy football playoff.

QB -  Peyton Manning (#4 preseason ranking)
  • He's your clear MVP in fantasy and he's going to win the MVP in the NFL this season. He set the record for most passing touchdowns in the NFL, breaking Tom Brady's record of 50 back in 2007. Plus in 2 of the 3 fantasy playoff weeks, he threw for 397 yards and 4 TDs and then 400 yards and 4 TDs. No picks in those two games.
QB - Nick Foles (unranked, but warned Mike Vick owners back in July about Foles)
  • Hard to think somebody can be an MVP when he most likely wasn't drafted in 95% of fantasy leagues this year. However once he took over for Mike Vick in that Eagles offense, he was single handedly winning you fantasy matchups week in and week out.
Honorable mention - Philip Rivers, Drew Brees, Andy Dalton

Fantasy Football Playoffs MVPs - Wide Receivers

The Pittsburgh Steelers didn't even blink when Mike Wallace signed with the Miami Dolphins because they knew what they had in Antonio Brown.  Brown has gone 16 weeks now without catching less than 5 passes in a game.  The model of consistency!  Brown added a 6th catch this week just to charm his fantasy owners and cracked 100 yards receiving for the second time in 3 weeks.  It was, however, the only week in the playoffs he didn't score.  That being said Brown finished 10th, 6th and 20th making him the top WR this playoffs.  Only 3 other receivers finished in the top 25 in all 3 weeks, and that is final, even with Roddy White, Harry Douglas, Anquan Boldin, and Michael Crabtree going tonight.  Crabree's 25th place finish last week was the only time any of these receivers made the list.  The 49ers and Falcons TEs have been the offensive focal point, and both have a shot at being the Top TE this playoff season tonight!  Check back tomorrow for the MVP post.

The Minnesota Vikings finally realized how to get the ball into Cordarrelle Patterson's hands and at just the right time for fantasy owners.  The rookie WR finished 2nd to Antonio Brown, ranking 8th, 21st and 12th, during the fantasy playoffs thanks to all types of plays.  Even in our PPR league, with just 13 receptions over 3 games, Patterson ranked this high as he scored a TD in all 3 weeks.  This week he didn't catch a TD but he did managed to rush for a TD.

Josh Gordon finished 3rd, ranking 3rd, 24th and 17th, and after scoring 5 weeks in a row, failed to get into the endzone when owners needed him most.  His last minute 43 yard TD in Week 15 saved the day and kept him on this list as it was just his 3rd receptions of the game and he totaled just 24 other yards.

And last but not least, Vincent Jackson continues to quietly perform for a Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that ranks last in passing.  Jackson caught just 13 passes but scored twice and totaled 226 receiving yards.

None of these guys had double digit reception days or multi touchdown games, but they were the only WRs to finish in the top 25 all 3 weeks.

Check out the QB and RB MVPs!

Fantasy Football Playoffs MVPs - Running Backs

Not only did Jamaal Charles dominate the Fantasy Football Playoffs, but he was the top back over 13 regular season weeks and it wasn't even close.  But  weeks 14, 15 and 16, Charles finished 2nd, 1st and 6th amongst running backs in the We Talk Fantasy Sports 12 man PPR League.  Talk about consistency!  There were just six running backs who finished in the top 25 all 3 weeks of the playoffs, and these rankings are final as Steven Jackson and Frank Gore did not finish in the top 25 in both Weeks 14 and 15.

Jamaal Charles gained 517 yards from scrimmage over 3 games, and scored 8 touchdowns.  Those are QB numbers!

Even with two #1 rankings, LeSean McCoy couldn't take home the silver medal, thanks to a 25th place finish in Week 15.  Instead, Packers rookie RB Eddie Lacy gets that honor.  Lacy finished 14th in week 14 but then redeem himself and helped his owners to a championship with 4th and 5th place rankings to round out the fantasy football season.  Lacy took 56 carries 290 yards and scored 4 times.

McCoy actually didn't even finish 3rd or 4th either as DeMarco Murray (two top 5 rankings) and Ryan Mathews (6th, 9th and 11th) squeaked by with lower total rankings.  Mathews redeemed himself this season finishing as the 15th overall RB.  Murray rushed 58 times for 376 yards, breaking 100 yards twice and rushing for 96 this week and scored 2 rushing touchdowns..  He also added 9 receptions and caught a TD.  Mathews totaled 329 rushing yards, carried the ball 89 times, and rushed for a TD in each of the San Diego Chargers 3 games during the Playoffs.

LeSean McCoy dominated in weeks 14 and 16 finishing as the #1 RB in each week.  But a week 15 stinker, in which he gained just 108 total yards and failed to score, left him at #25 and just barely making this list at all!  But between weeks 14 and 16 McCoy totaled 383 total yards and scored 4 TDs.

There was one other RB who ranked top 25 in all 3 playoff matchups and that was the St. Louis Rams Zac Stacy.  The Rams RB situation was a mess before the season but once Stacy took over full time things became clear, Zac is the Rams future at RB.  He rushed for a TD in all 3 games and eclipsed the 100 yard mark in the last 2.  He totaled 262 rushing yards on 75 carries.

The Texas Rangers Sign Shin-Soo Choo

The Texas Rangers have agreed to signed free agent outfielder Shin Soo Choo to a 7-year $130 million deal. This is a big splash by the Rangers who lost star Josh Hamilton last off season and will likely lose power hitter Nelson Cruz this off season.

Adding Choo just improves this Rangers offense even more after they traded for Prince Fielder back in November.

Choo had a nice year last season for the Cincinnati Reds, hitting .285 with 21 home runs, 54 RBI, scoring 107 runs and had on OBP of .423. The 31 year old only drove in 54 runs but he was hitting lead off for a stacked Reds lineup.

Playing at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington this year, which is very hitter friendly, especially in the summer time, Choo should continue to hit home runs, get on base and hopefully drive in more runs if he's not hitting lead off.

With guys like Elvis Andrus, Leonys Martin and Jurickson Profar, there is a good chance Choo will not hit leadoff and will be put into the middle of a very good lineup.

If I'm managing the 2014 Texas Rangers I'm putting together this lineup:

Leonys Martin - CF
Elvis Andrus - SS
Shin-Soo Choo - LF
Prince Fielder - 1B
Adrian Beltre - 3B
Alex Rios - RF
Mitch Moreland - DH
Jurickson Profar - 2B
Geovany Soto / J.P. Arencibia - C

Not too shabby.

Brook Lopez Done for Season

A huge blow came to the Brooklyn Nets as Brook Lopez broke his foot and will miss the remainder of the 2013-2014 NBA season.

"The Nets confirmed Saturday that Lopez broke his surgically repaired right foot, which he fractured in 2011 and later had a screw replaced in."

It's already been a dreadful start for the Nets who sit at 9-17, as many thought this team had the potential to make a run at the finals. Injuries have been a major factor in why the Nets have struggled as they've been without Lopez, Deron Williams, Paul Pierce, Andrei Kirilenko and Jason Terry at some point this season.
