Who Would You Rather Have - Mark Teixeira or Matt Adams

Mark Teixeira and Matt Adams are two big first baseman and with their size, comes a ton of power. Teixeira will be turning 34 in April and is coming off wrist surgery. Teixeira had the surgery in July and has not suffered any setbacks. It may take some time for Tex to get his wrist back to 100% but he will be ready to go come opening day. Adams who is just 25, will be taking over first base for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2014.

During his first 3 years with the New York Yankees (2009-2011) Teixeira averaged 157 games a season with 37 home runs, 114 RBI and 102 runs scored. Those are MVP type seasons. However in those 3 years, Teixeira's average dropped each season, going from .292 down to .248. Assuming he can stay healthy in 2014, Teixeira will be hitting clean up for a stacked Yankees lineup. He will be sandwiched between Carlos Beltran and Brian McCann, so he should see plenty of good pitches to hit and with Jacoby Ellsbury and Derek Jeter at the top of the lineup, there will be plenty of RBI chances for Tex. He might be limited to around 25 home runs this season but if he can drive the ball and limit his strikeouts then he can still end up knocking in close to 100 runs.

Matt Adams is a big boy. At 6'3, 260 lbs, there is a lot of pop in his bat. In 2013, Adams had 319 at-bats in limited action. Adams hit 17 home runs, knocked in 51 runs, and hit .284. That's 1 home run every 19 at bats. Give Adams 600 at-bats and he's going to hit over 30 home runs. One thing Adams will need to cut back on if he wants to keep his job are his strike outs. Adams struck out 80 times, good for once every 4 at-bats. Adams will hit 5th for the Cardinals, behind Allen Craig and in front of Yadier Molina.
