Indians Remove John Axford From Closing Role

The Cleveland Indians have removed relief pitcher John Axford as the team's closer. In 14 2/3 innings so far this season, Axford has a 4.91 ERA and a WHIP of 1.77. Axford has converted 9 of his 11 save opportunities but has given up 13 hits and 13 walks in less than 15 innings.

Manager Terry Francona said that the Indians will use a closer by committee for the time being. Bryan Shaw, Cody Allen, Marc Rzepczynski and Scott Atchison will all likely get some opportunities to close out games for the Tribe.

Axford's inability to be effective out of the bullpen in big spots, is a big reason the Indians are 2 games under .500.
