The Chicago Cubs and Oakland Athletics have agreed to a trade that will send pitchers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to Oakland and top prospect Addison Russell to Chicago. The Cubs will also receive pitcher Dan Straily, outfielder Billy McKinney and a player to be named later.

Jeff Samardzija is 2-7 on the year but he has an ERA of 2.83 and has struck out 103 batters in 108 innings.

Jason Hammel is also having a good season, as he is 7-5 with a 2.98 ERA and has struck out 97 batters in 102.2 innings.

Oakland knew going into the season that they would be short handed when it came to starting pitching, as they lost Jarrod Parker and A.J. Griffin for the season due to injuries. Somehow, the Athletics still have the best record in the majors at 53-33.

Acquiring Samardzija and Hammel gives Oakland six solid starters and could use a six man rotation or move Jesse Chavez or Tommy Milone to the bullpen.

The 6 man rotation could look like this:

Jeff Samardzija
Jason Hammel
Jesse Chavez
Tommy Milone

The Cubs, as usual are in last place in the NL Central.

Addison Russell is a top prospect shortstop who is hitting .333 with 3 doubles, 1 home run, 8 RBI and 3 stolen bases in 13 games in AA. He has missed time this year due to injuries.

Yes the Cubs already have Starlin Castro and top prospects Kris Bryant, and Javier Baez but Baez and Russell could end up switching positions down the line. The Cubs future is very bright as they have a guy like Anthony Rizzo to build around. Russell, Castro, Rizzo, Bryant, and Baez could make for a very dangerous lineup and put fear into opposing pitchers.
