UPDATE (8/25, 1:30 PM) : Eric O'Flaherty will most likely take over the closer role while Doolittle is on the DL. Gregerson is expected to stay in the setup role.

The Oakland Athletics have placed their All-Star closer Sean Doolittle on the 15-day DL with a strained right intercostal muscle. He is expected to only need the minimum 15 days but these types of injures can linger for much longer.

Doolittle saved 20 of 23 chances and has a 2.28 ERA and a 0.70 WHIP with 80 strikeouts over 55.1 innings.

In the mean time the A's will let Luke Gregerson handle the closer duties. Gregerson has a 2.17 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP over 58 innings.
