The Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed to trade OF Matt Kemp, C Tim Federowicz and $25-30 mil to the San Diego Padres in exchange for C Yasmani Grandal, pitching prospect Joe Wieland and another prospect. Kemp is still owed $107 mil, including that $25-30 mil from LA, through 2019. Kemp played in 150 games last season, after averaging just 90 games over the two seasons prior.
The outfield at Chavez Ravine is a little less crowded these day with Yasiel Puig, Carl Crawford, Andre Ethier, Scott Van Slyke and Chris Heisey.
Grandal will split time with A.J. Ellis behind the plate, and while he does have some pop, he is a career .245 hitter.
Over in San Diego, Matt Kemp will slide into the cleanup spot of the Padres lineup, that includes Jedd Gyorko, Will Venable and sometimes Carlos Quentin and Yonder Alonso. Remember that name?! He along with Grandal and Edinson Volquez were traded from the Reds for Mat Latos. Looks like one helluva trade by Cincinnati these day!
Gone are the days of Kemp stealing 30-40 bases, but he did hit 38 doubles and 25 home runs last season, so the power has not faded. The Padres have also moved the fences in at Petco Park.
