The Minnesota Twins have signed Ervin Santana to a 4 year $54 mil deal. This will be Santana's 4th team in 4 years. He spent the first 8 years of his career with the Los Angeles Angels, before being traded to the Kansas City Royals and then signing with the Atlanta Braves last season. He has finished with an ERA under 4.00 in 5 of the last 7 seasons. He will join Phil Hughes, Ricky Nolasco, Kyle Gibson and Tommy Milone/Mike Pelfrey in the Twins rotation.
Much like the signing of Pat Neshek and Luke Gregerson by the Houston Astros, this makes me wonder, where was Santana's market? Sure, $13.5 mil per year is a lot to give to a soon to be 32 year old pitcher on a 4 year contract, but too many teams that will be in the playoff hunt this year could have used his services.
