The Tampa Bay Rays are 8-8 to start the 2015 MLB season and have done so without Drew Smyly, who has been out with shoulder inflammation. Chris Archer, Jake Odorizzi and Nate Karns have made 12 of the teams 16 starts. Archer and Odorizzi have been lights out. Karns, not so much. Smyly is a huge upgrade to a rotation that has seen Matt Andriese, Steve Geltz and Erasmo Ramirez makes its four other starts.
Smyly was acquired in the David Price trade with the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners. Austin Jackson landed in the Pacific Northwest.
Smyly made 7 starts for Tampa last season and pitched 47.2 innings and finished with a 1.70 ERA/0.77 WHIP. He struck out 44 batters, walking 11.
He will help the Rays fight the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles for the American League East crown.
