Having a reliable leadoff hitter is important once a game. But these guys also get the most opportunities at the plate so you better make sure that guy can hit in any situation as well as being a spark plug in the 1st inning. Every team has a different approach with their leadoff hitter, some managers just slot their fastest player at the top of their lineup while other managers make sure whoever is leading off, has a high on base percentage.

Jason Kipnis has been scorching hot since moving to the leadoff spot in the Indians lineup.  He hit just .253 batting 2nd and 3rd in the order, but .378 at the top.  In April he hit just .218, but May has been very kind to Kipnis, hitting .429 with 15 doubles, 3 triples and 4 home runs.  He also walked 16 times and owned a .515 OBP in May.  Kipnis scored 30 runs this past month.

Dee Gordon has been everything the Marlins hoped he would be when they traded Austin Barnes, Chris Hatcher, Andrew Heaney and Enrique Hernandez this past December.  Gordon got off to a hot start, hitting .409 in April and continued to pick up hits in May with a .351 BA.  He has been successful on 20 of his 27 stolen base attempts and has 10 doubles and 2 triples, but all of that has led to just 29 runs scored.

Billy Hamilton leads the MLB in stolen bases, but only 17 have come when batting leadoff.  The Reds have since let Zack Cozart / Brandon Phillips take over batting Hamilton 8th/9th.

Billy Burns has hit .337 as the Athletics leadoff batter, and in 95 ABs has scored 16 runs thanks to 4 doubles a triple and 2 home runs.  Burns hit 2 home runs in the Minors dating back to 2011!
