Mozeliak: Peralta will have thumb examined in STL. Initial read, could be tear, could be "2-3 months." #STLCards— Chris Hrabe (@chrabe) March 7, 2016
Bad news for the St. Louis Cardinals, as they learned they could be without their starting shortstop Jhonny Peralta for 2-3 months with a possible ligament tear in his left thumb.
The Cardinals do not have a backup shortstop ready to step in for an extended period of time, so they may be forced to move Jedd Gyorko who only played 28 games at short last season. Gyorko was expected to split time at second base with Kolten Wong, so if the Cardinals want to keep it that way, they could give Cuban shortstop Aledmys Diaz a chance.
Regardless there is no way the Cardinals will be able to match the production that Peralta gives them offensively or defensively. Last season Peralta hit .275 with 17 home runs and 71 RBI.
