The Boston Red Sox did not add a bat at the trade deadline and instead will call up Andrew Benintendi to play LF. The 22 year old prospect will take over for Brock Holt and Bryce Brentz who have been platooning there in recent games. Holt should be able to give guys like Dustin Pedroia and Travis Shaw a day off.
Benintendi has hit 31 doubles, 12 triples and 9 home runs while maintaining a .312 BA. He has played 34 games at A-Salem and 63 games at AA-Portland. He has also drawn more walks (74) than strikeouts (63).
The Red Sox offense was already the #1 scoring lineup in the league, by 40 runs. Now, you add Benintendi to Mookie Betts, Dustin Pedroia, Xander Bogaerts, David Ortiz, Hanley Ramirez and Jackie Bradley Jr and there is no excuse for the Sox not to win the AL East. They are currently a game behind the Baltimore Orioles.
They have tried to fix their rotation, adding Drew Pomeranz and picked up some bullpen help in Fernando Abad at the deadline. Craig Kimbrel was activated off the DL yesterday.
