The Falcons start the game with the ball, and after a quick 16 yard catch and run by Taylor Gabriel, they are forced to punt. Devonta Freeman was stopped behind the line of scrimmage on both of his run attempts.
After a quick three and out by Seattle, Freeman broke off a 60 yard touchdown run on 3rd and 1. The Falcons lead 7-0 midway through the first quarter.
The Falcons defense stepped up again forcing another Seahawks punt. Eric Weems returned the punt 25 yards to sets the offense up with good field position, at their own 41.
On first down, Matt Ryan connected with tight end Austin Hooper on a 39 yard strike. The very next play, Ryan throws a delayed screen to Freeman, who ran for 20 yards to the end zone, giving Atlanta a quick 14-0 lead.
As the first quarter ended, the Seahawks offense was clicking and they started the second quarter with a 2nd and goal from the 3 yard line.
Russell Wilson got the Seahawks on the board with a QB scramble to start the second, cutting the Falcons lead in half, 14-7. Seattle went 76 yards on 9 plays on the drive.
It looked like the Seahawks defense were going to force a punt on three separate occasions, but Ryan hooked up with Julio Jones to convert all three first downs. The drive did eventually stall, resulting in a 56 yard Matt Bryant field goal, giving Atlanta a 17-7 lead.
Seattle found themselves in a similar situation on their next drive. Facing 4th and 2, they decided to go for it, instead of trying a Steven Hauschka 54 yard field goal. Thomas Rawls was stopped short of the first down.
Atlanta nearly capitalized with a touchdown, but Kam Chancellor destroyed Jones in the endzone, forcing him to drop the pass. Then Cliff Avril sacked Ryan on a third down, forcing another Matt Bryant field goal. Atlanta was up 20-7 with less than a minute left in the half.
With just seconds remaining, Russell Wilson broke out of an Adrian Clayborn sack that would have ended the half, and found a wide open Doug Baldwin who showboated into the endzone for a 68 yard score.
The teams entered the locker room with the Falcons up 20-14.
Both defenses forced punts to start the half, and on Seattle's second possession, Atlanta forces Wilson to throw a pick six to rookie Brian Poole to give the Falcons a 26-14 after a failed 2-pt conversion.
With Seattle moving the ball into the Falcons territory, Wilson was picked off again at the 33 yard line by Deion Jones. Wilson was hit as he threw it and the ball floated right into Jones' hands.
Freeman picked up another 34 yards on a nice run to start the drive, but on the final play of the third quarter, Ryan threw a pass to Julio Jones that bounced off him, right into Richard Sherman's hands for an INT and a touchback, keeping Seattle alive.
Matt Ryan put the game out of reach with a 19 yard touchdown pass to Mohamed Sanu in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, to go up 33-14. That would be the final score as the Falcons advance to the NFC Championship.
