Is Jordan Howard Todd Gurley 2.0?

While a lot of people, including myself, are high on Jordan Howard, there is every reason to be worried. Howard is entering his second year in the league, on a struggling team, with Mike Glennon playing quarterback. Remind you of the 2016 Rams? It should.

In their rookie years, both Howard and Gurley started 13 games. They both had yards per attempt averages in the 4.8-5.2 range, and they both had yards per game averages in the 85-90 range. So, how could there be a way that Howard won't suffer from a sophomore slump? Well, there is.

Howard is NOT GOING TO UNDERPERFORM.

Between the tackles, Chicago has some of the best offensive linemen in the NFL. Their two guards, Josh Sitton and Kyle Long, are established veterans. Their center, Cody Whitehair, ranked 6th out of 38 centers, according to Pro Football Focus.

Additionally, Howard will benefit from the departure of Alshon Jeffrey. He's a much better receiver than Todd Gurley, and focused on becoming a better pass catcher this offseason. He even slimmed down to gain speed.

Gurley's rookie year stats were misleading. In weeks 2-5, Gurley rushed for a total of 566 yards - over 50% of his yards for the entire season. The volume that Jordan Howard owned was not there for Gurley. Howard only dipped below 13 attempts one game - Gurley did this 4 times.

In 2016, Howard rushed for the 2nd most yards in the league, despite only starting 13 games. Overall, Jordan Howard is much better suited for a successful sophomore year than Todd Gurley. You should feel confident taking Howard in the beginning of the 2nd round.

We ranked Howard as the 8th RB in our initial rankings.
