Prior to the MLB Winter Meetings officially starting, the Arizona Diamondbacks traded Paul Goldschmidt to the St. Louis Cardinals. Luke Weaver, Carson Kelly, Andy Young and a draft pick head back to Arizona.
Goldschmidt is still one of the best hitters in the MLB and will turn 32 at the end of the 2019 season. He has hit 33+ home runs in three of the last four season but had a career-high 173 strikeouts last season.
In his final 100 games of 2018, Paul Goldschmidt hit .334/.423/.608 with 25 HR. 👀 pic.twitter.com/WggOtQajRp— MLB Stats (@MLBStats) December 5, 2018
Last year, Matt Carpenter started at 1B 95 times while Jose Martinez played there in 84 games. Carp will shift back to 3B while Martinez goes to the RF where he played 46 games in 2018. Jedd Gyorko gets pushed out of the starting lineup at 3B.
In Arizona, Roster Resource currently has Jake Lamb taking over at 1B. Eduardo Escobar is there to man the hot corner. With A.J. Pollock testing free agency, the Diamondbacks currently have Jarrod Dyson starting in CF. The offense, on paper, sucks now.
Arizona's pitching staff gets better with Weaver joining Zack Greinke, Robbie Ray and Zach Godley. The Dbacks also signed 30-year-old Merrill Kelly who has recently pitched in the KBO. Taijuan Walker could return to the rotation late in 2019 as well.
