The Holidays are over and the New Year has arrived, the only thing left to focus on is winning your Fantasy Basketball league and we are here to help!  Most of the injured stars have returned, but on Saturday night we lost Kevin Love AGAIN!  It appears Love will miss the next month or so and will be replaced by Dante Cunningham and Derrick Williams.  On Saturday night Cunningham was just 2% owned in Yahoo leagues but today he is 8% owned while Williams has jumped just 1% from 11-12.  Clearly Williams has fallen out of favor with both coaches and fans alike.

We are at a point in the season where we are not looking to find all-stars on the free agent list, yet guys who can help fill up certain categories, while every now and again provide a boost in the scoring column or assists.  Take a look Matt Barnes (42%), who during the month of December when the Los Angeles Clippers did not lose a single game, averaged 13 points and 4 rebounds in 25 minutes per game.  He dropped 20 points three times, yet scored less than 10 four times.  He was knocking down 3s, grabbing rebounds handing out a couple of assists every night, and was shifting those numbers from one category to the next night in and night out.  When you add a player like Barnes to your team of drafted players, it's the difference between a 7-2 week and a 5-4 week because you had Harrison Barnes (46%) instead!  But Matt Barnes has continued solid play in 2013 over 4 games including a 40 minute start.  His shooting % is down a bit but that is due in large to the extended minutes he is getting.  He has upped his rebounds this month to 6.5 per game and is handing out 3.5 assists per game as well as scoring about 12 points per game.

Jason Thompson (57%) of the Sacramento Kings New Year resolution must have been to shoot the ball more, and he is actually taking ownership of it!  In 4 January games, Thompson has yet to attempt less than 10 shots while taking a season high 16 shots twice!  This has lead to 16 points per game on 52% shooting.  His rebounding is down to 6.5 per night in the New Year though which is below his season average of 7.7, but he has just 1 double digit rebounding game in the last 9 games.  If you can handle the potential let down in the rebounding category, than adding Jason Thompson to your roster is a solid idea.

  • I am by no means suggesting adding John Salmons (17%) to your roster, but if you are looking for some guard play, Salmons does have two 20 point performances in the Kings last 5 games.
The Atlanta Hawks have been playing WAY above expectations (20-12) after trading Joe Johnson to the Brooklyn Nets for a bag of balls but Kyle Korver (46%) has been a HUGE key to their success.  After missing 5 games at the end of November into December, only Danilo Gallinari and teammate Lou Williams have made more 3pointers.  On top of his hot shooting, he added six straight 5+ rebounding nights.  In the New Year, Korver is averaging a season high 11 points, including three 3s, while sprinkling in 3 rebounds and 3 assists.

Rookie John Henson (6%) has been getting minutes and been producing!  He has played at least 23 minutes in a three Bucks contests in January and has scored 37 points and grabbed 37 rebounds while blocking 5 shots and adding 4 steals.  Not saying he can keep up the play or the minutes, but might be a sneaky play!

Andray Blatche (24%) has posted back to back double doubles off the bench in Brooklyn.  I am not sure why he is not starting yet but Blatche definitely has value moving forward.
