NFL Draft - Round 1 Fantasy Football Prospects

So last night the 2013 NFL season official kicked off when the Kansas City Chiefs draft Eric Fisher, not Luke Joeckel with the #1 overall draft pick.  From there on out, 8 more offensive lineman were drafted in the 1st round and 18 defensive players, leaving us non IDP fantasy football players with just 5 offensive skill position players to look at.

If you are an IDP player and want to chime in, leave a comment!

The Rams made a splash by trading up to snag West Viriginia WR Tavon Austin, who could and should be a healthy Danny Amendola, that also plays special teams, so think more Percy Harvin.  Without Steven Jackson this year in St. Louis I am a little skeptical of the full potential of the Rams offensively, but I would love to have Tavon Austin as a WR3, but I guarantee you will see people reach for him in your leagues draft.
  • The Rams acquired this pick in a deal with the Bills, who moved down from pick 8 to pick 16

The Buffalo Bills were next when they drafted EJ Manuel as the lone QB drafted on day one.  Geno Smith was embarrassed and shown exiting the building.  This was a great day for the Bills as they added a draft pick by moving down, and still got the player they wanted.  With the release of Ryan Fitzpatrick, its pretty clear that this is EJ Manuel's team.  With a great running back duo in C.J. Spiller / Fred Jackson, and a skilled receiver in Stevie Johnson, Manuel should be in for a nice easy transition to the NFL and the AFC East.  Not worthy of a draft pick, but COULD be a mid/late season addition.

With the 21st pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals made my favorite draft choice of the night, Tyler Eifert.  The Bengals will now run a two TE offense with Eifert and Jermaine Gresham, and this will open up the field for A.J. Green and Mohamed SanuAndy Dalton is in for a BIG season!  Not sure I would draft Eifert as I do not recommend having 2 TEs on a roster (unless you need them) but he will be on a bunch of peoples radar once the BYE weeks come.

The Houston Texans added WR DeAndre Hopkins, and he SHOULD slide right into the starting rotation as Devier Posey will start the season on the PUP list and not eligibile until week 6.  He will be option #4 on the team up until that point with Arian Foster, Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels being the focal points.  I MIGHT draft Hopkins as a bench player but I would not count on him producing early in the season.

That brings us fantasy football players to the last notable draft pick, Cordarrelle Patterson WR Tennessee, who was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings.  Patterson was the Vikings 3rd 1st round pick.  He will pretty much take over all of Percy Harvin's roles as the kick and punt returner and that slot receiver.  Patterson is super quick and can change direction like the USC Reggie Bush and because of his ability on special teams, could hold value as a WR3 but I would only add him to my roster AFTER I had 3 WRs on a team with a good QB and that liked to pass the ball!
  • The Vikings acquired this pick from the Patriots
That's all folks, Round 1 was boring for fantasy football, but don't forget Jamaal Charles, Maurice Jones-Drew, LeSean McCoy and Chris Johnson all had their offensive lines upgraded, which means that their fantasy value increases!
