NFL Draft - Round 2 Fantasy Football Prospects

Round 2 of the NFL Draft saw the San Diego Chargers trade up for Manti Te'o and the New York Jets selected Geno Smith with the 39th pick.  We also saw 5 running backs go, but it seems just 3 or 4 of them will actually have an impact on the 2013 NFL season. There were also 3 wide receivers and 3 tight ends selected.

If you are an IDP player and want to chime in on the defensive players selected, leave a comment!

If Geno Smith wins the starting gig for the New York Jets, his fantasy value is still very limited.  Santonio Holmes is the only consistent receiver on the team and with no real run game, teams are going to force the Jets to throw the ball.  They did acquire Chris Ivory from the Saints for a 4th round draft pick which should help, but until we see the "offense" in action, we should avoid all Jets players in fantasy football.

The Cincinnati Bengals were the first team to draft a RB and Giovani Bernard was the lucky prospect to join an increasingly favorable Bengals offense.  The Bengals do have BJGE but Bernard will see enough snaps as the change of pace back.  I would draft him only in a deeper league and as a 3rd or even 4th RB.

With the 16th pick in the 2nd round the Steelers drafted Le'Veon Bell and he could easily be the starting running back come September.  The Steelers have MAJOR issues running the ball last year but they also had a ton of injuries to the offensive line.  Bell could serve as a RB2 but I would prefer to have him as my backup.  Either way, he will most likely be drafted this summer.

The Denver Broncos added Montee Ball with the 58th overall pick and he will be splitting time with Willis McGahee and Knowshon Moreno.  Clearly someone will emerge as the feature back, but until that happens Ball is left on the waiver wires.

Just 3 picks aster Ball went to Denver, the Green Bay Packers drafted 'Bama back Eddie Lacy.  Is there a more perfect place for Lacy to have landed?  He will not have to rush the ball 30 times a game and with the pass attack of the Packers, Lacy will have lots of open field between the hash marks, so his health issues shouldn't be a problem.  The Packers do have some line issues but Lacy should be the starting back come September and I have NO DOUBT, he will be drafted in every league.  A bunch of potential short yardage touchdown opportunities that used to go to John Kuhn.

The Seahawks added Christine Michael from Texas A&M but with Marshawn Lynch there are very few carries for any backup RB.

The Titans grabbed the first WR of the 2nd round when the added Justin Hunter, a local boy from the Tennessee Volunteers.  Should be a nice easy transition for him and most fans will already know and love him.  Hunter is now 4th on the Titans depth chart behind Kenny Britt, Nate Washington, and Kendall Wright.  Hunter will have no value this season so do not draft him.

Seven pick later, the Buffalo Bills gave their new QB EJ Manuel a nice weapon to pair up with Stevie Johnson when they drafted Robert Woods.  With the run game already in place with the Bills offense have tons of potential.  Woods should be a starter in Week 1 and while I probably wouldn't want Woods as a WR3, but he could be a nice BYE week filler.

The Patriots added Aaron Dobson but as we have seen in New England, receivers have a difficult time learning the offense.  I doubt we see much of Dobson this season, so ignore him come draft time.

The Philadelphia Eagles took the 1st TE of the 2nd round when the added Zach Ertz out of Stanford.  With Brent Celek already on board, the Eagles will run a two tight end offense with Chip Kelley running the show, great news for these TEs.  Unless you are in a two TE league I would avoid Ertz, but he could be a popular waiver wire move this season.

The Cowboys added Gavin Escobar but Jason Witten is still the guy and between Witten, Miles Austin and Dez Bryant, there is little room for anyone else.  Escobar has no value this season.

The 49ers replaced Delanie Walker with Vance McDonald in the 2nd round, but even Delaine Walker had limited value in fantasy, and he is an above average TE.  McDonald has no value this season.
