The Pitching Duel Fail and Thursday’s Box Scores

There was speculation that the Justin Verlander versus Yu Darvish pitching duel could be a thing of legend. However, Verlander never made it to the fourth inning, giving up seven earned runs in the third. Stephen Strasburg reminded us of his dominance as he pitched eight strong innings for the Nationals.

Tigers 4 v Rangers 10: Justin Verlander got roughed up, giving up eight earned runs over 2.2 innings. Yu Darvish was the winning pitcher, giving up four earned runs over eight innings.  Mitch Moreland had two doubles and Geovany Soto and Nelson Cruz hit home runs. Don Kelly and Jhonny Peralta had home runs for the Tigers (Texas leads the series 1-0).

Mets 5 v Cardinals 2: Adam Wainwright surrenders four runs over six innings, yielding six hits and one walk, while striking out eight. Jonathan Niese pitched 7.1 innings, giving up only two runs on six hits and two walks. Daniel Murphy, David Wright, Rick Ankiel, and Lucas Duda all hit doubles for the Mets. Carlos beltran, Pete Kozma, and Matt carpenter all hit doubles for the Cardinals. Bobby Parnell registered his fourth save of the season (St. Louis won the series 3-1).

Mariners 3 v Yankees 2: Tom Wilhelmsen recorded his 11th save of the season and Michael Morse hit his 10th home run. Dustin Ackley and Jason Bay added doubles for the Mariners. Andy Pettitte left the game after 4.2 innings due to an injury having yielded two runs on four hits and three walks. Brett Gardner stole two bases and Curtis Granderson swiped one (Seattle won the series 2-1).

Brewers 1 v Pirates 7: Francisco Liriano won his second game, lowering his ERA to 1.64. He struck out seven over 5.2 innings, allowing six hits and walking three.  Russel Martin, Starling Marte, and Clint Barmes hit doubles for the Pirates and Travis Snider hit a home run.  Jean Segura stole his 14th base of the season for the Brewers (Pittsburgh won the series 3-1).

Red Sox 4 v Rays 3: Alex Cobb was robbed of a win as Fernando Rodney blew the save opportunity and took the loss, giving up three earned runs on four walks and one hit. Junichi Tazawa earned the win by pitching two innings. Shane Victorino and Will Middlebrooks hit doubles for the Red Sox.  Ryan Roberts hit his third home run of the season for the Rays (Boston won the series 2-1).

Reds 5 v Marlins 3: Steve Cishek took the loss for the Marlins, giving up thee earned runs on three hits and two walks. Aroldis Chapman earned the win for the Reds, pitching 0.2 innings, both outs coming via strike out. Joey Votto and Jay Bruce hit doubles for the Reds and Brandon Phillips blasted a home run. Juan Pierre hit his first home run of the season for the Marlins and Adeiny Hechavarria hit his fifth triple (Cincinnati swept the series 3-0).

Giants 8 v Rockies 6: Matt Cain earned an ugly win pitching 6.1 innings, giving up six earned runs on eight hits and two walks. Sergio Romo picked up his 13th save. Todd Helton, Nolan Arenado, and Wilin Rosario hit home runs for the Rockies. Dexter Fowler, Carlos Gonzalez, and DJ LaMahieu all stole a base. Gregor Blanco and Brandon Crawford hit doubles for the Giants (San Francisco leads the series 1-0).

White Sox 5 v Angels 4: Jerome Williams was stuck with the no decision after he pitched six innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits while striking out three. Addison Reed pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 13th save. Alex Rios hit his ninth home run of the season for the White Sox. Albert Pujols hit his seventh home run and Howie Kendrick and Mark Trumbo hit doubles for the Angels (Chicago leads the series 1-0).

Nationals 6 v Padres 2: Stephen Strasburg pitched eight strong innings, giving up three hits and three walks, while striking out four. Adam LaRoche and Bryce Harper hit home runs for the Nationals. Jedd Gyorko and Chase Headley had doubles for the Padres (Washington leads the series 1-0).
