Get To Know Him - Chris Owings

Back in December of 2012, the Arizona Diamondbacks acquired SS Didi Gregorius from the Cincinnati Reds, as part of a 3 team deal that sent Shin-Soo Choo to the Cincinnati Reds, and Trevor Bauer to the Cleveland Indians.  The idea was that Gregorius would take over the teams SS position with the loss of Stephen Drew to the Boston Red Sox via free agency.  Little did the DBacks know, they already had their future shortstop in their farm system, Chris Owings, who they drafted 41st overall in the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft.  Owings has officially been named the Arizona Diamondbacks opening day shortstop.

Owings has been our radar for a while now. Every season we track the top hitters in AAA and Owings tends be near the top every time we update the list.  A career .291 Minor League hitter, Owings owned a .330 batting average last season at AAA Reno and added 31 doubles and 12 home runs, driving in 81 runs and stealing 20 bases!  He is just 22 years old and will hit. There is a good chance that he will bat 7th or 8th in the Diamondbacks lineup with Gerardo Parra and Aaron Hill at the top but I think Arizona should hit Owings 2nd, Hill 6th and slide Miguel Montero into the 7th spot.
