Who Would You Rather Have - Jason Castro or Evan Gattis

Jason Castro and Evan Gattis burst onto the fantasy baseball scene last season and in drastically different ways. Castro smacked 35 doubles and 18 home runs while hitting .276 and driving in 56 runs over 435 ABs. He finished as our 9th ranked catcher. Gattis, in nearly 100 less ABs, hit 21 doubles and 21 home runs while driving in 65 runs playing both catcher and the outfield. He hit just .243.

Only J.P. Arencibia and Jarrod Saltalamacchia struck out more times than Castro, but only 6 other catchers with 350+ ABs had a higher batting average.

With a full season ahead of him, Gattis could lead all catchers in home runs and possibly RBIs as well in that stacked Atlanta Braves lineup, but his batting average will leave something to be desired.

It looks as though Castro is slipping in drafts and could be considered a sleeper.  If you decide to hold off until the end of the draft to add a catcher to your roster, and Jason Castro is available, I think you have done well.  We ranked Gattis 9th and Castro 11th in our catcher rankings.
