Elite Eight

The first round should be pretty quick in a 8 team league, but still we need to be prepared.  Here are our top 8 players, in order:
  1. Paul Goldschmidt
  2. Andrew McCutchen
  3. Joey Votto
  4. Ryan Braun
  5. Clayton Kershaw
  6. Freddie Freeman
  7. Carlos Gonzalez
  8. Troy Tulowitzki

Assuming everyone holds onto just a single catcher, even if we wait until all 7 owners select theirs, we will most likely be able to choose from Miguel Montero, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and Travis d'Arnaud.  Maybe we will get lucky and someone will skip over Wilson Ramos to take one of these three, but we will be waiting out the catcher position.

First Base

Goldschmidt, Votto, Freeman and Adrian Gonzalez are sure to be gone early in the draft and rightfully so.  We will be sure to grab one of the top first baseman.  The position doesn't allow for each team to have 2 good ones as players like Michael Cuddyer, Jonathon Lucroy, and  Daniel Murphy, players with multiple eligibility, make the position look deeper than it truly is.

Second Base

Second is pretty top heavy with Matt Carpenter, Brandon Phillips and Aaron Hill, but we will be sure to grab the best player available over reaching for a 2B.  I actually like a couple guys further down some rankings like Scooter Gennett and Braves prospect Tommy La Stella.  Being a keeper league and the need for a MI, drafting a prospect is going to be needed.

Third Base

Here is a position that we used to love, but the NL provides barely enough 3B to start in an 8 team league!  Let's just say if we can get Chris Johnson, we will be very happy.  Gosh, what happened to the hot corner?!

Believe it or not, the SS position is deeper than 3B!  Hanley Ramirez, Troy Tulowitzki, Ian Desmond and Everth Cabrera make this is a difficult position to want to wait on.  With the need for a MI we will most likely be drafting two SS.

Just because there are more of them then any other position, that doesn't mean you should wait for them.  The top half of this list is in a different league than the bottom half.  I fully anticipate us loading up early and possibly with back to back pick.

Starting Pitching

Same deal with the outfield, there are many more pitchers to select from, but in this scenario it is worth waiting.  We will most likely grab our ace and then moving away from pitching for a while.  QS = W in this league so the middle to bottom of the pack has more value than you think.

4 RP must be rostered, so we will have to target at least 2 closers, but I don't see us carrying RP on our bench.  Having Craig Kimbrel, Kenley Jansen or Aroldis Chapman would be fantastic, but I don't see us using a mid round pick on a closer.  These roles tend to fluctuate and an injury here or there create new closers.

Any tips or suggestions, please feel free to leave them in the comments section!
