Mark Melancon Takes Over As Pirates Closer

After making the playoffs last season, there were big time expectations for the Pirates this season. Right now the Pirates are 35-37, and are currently in 4th place in the NL Central. Manger Clint Hurdle has shaken up the teams bullpen. Hurdle removed Jason Grilli as the teams closer, and has given the job to Mark Melancon.

So far in 2014, the 37 year old Grilli already has twice as many blown saves as he did a year ago. In 15 chances, Grilli has blown 4 games for the Pirates. In 18.2 innings pitched, Grilli has a 4.34 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. Grilli already has given up 4 home runs. He only gave up 4 last season. After walking 13 batters in 50 innings last year, Grilli has walked 10 in just 18.2 innings this year.

Over his last 6.2 innings, Grilli has given up 8 hits, 5 walks and 5 runs. Big reason why Hurdle made the move.

Melancon takes over as the closer and he is having himself a great season, with a 1.89 ERA. Melancon has given up only 20 hits and 6 walks in 33.1 innings pitched. That's a WHIP of 0.78.

If Melancon is available in your fantasy leagues, he's obviously a must add.
