Boston Red Sox Trade John Lackey to St. Louis Cardinals

Today is the MLB trade deadline, and we have already seen Jon Lester be sent to Oakland for Yoenis Cespedes.  Hours later, the Boston Red Sox have also traded John Lackey, this time to the St. Louis Cardinals for Joe Kelly and Allen Craig !  The Cardinals acquired Justin Masterson yesterday.  Lackey signed with the Red Sox back in the Winter of 2009, agreeing to a $82.5mil 5 year contract.  Lackey missed the entire 2012 season to Tommy John surgery.  Lackey won 43 games for the Red Sox, including 11 in 2014.

Lackey joins Adam Wainwright, Lance Lynn, Shelby Miller, and eventually Michael Wacha and / or Masterson in the Cardinals rotation.  The Cardinals are 6-7 since catcher Yadier Molina hit the DL back on July 10th.and even at 6 games over .500, sit in 3rd place in the NL Central behind the Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates, but just 2.5 games out of 1st and one game out of the Wild Card.

Boston also traded Jake Peavy to the San Francisco Giants and Felix Doubront to the Chicago Cubs.  That leaves Clay Buchholz as the only starter left in the Red Sox rotation.  Brandon Workman and Rubby De La Rosa have been filling in.  Allen Webster made a spot start on July 27th.

Kelly will clearly jump right into the rotation in Boston, while Craig and Shane Victorino look like they will share playing time, and Craig could spell Mike Napoli at 1B as well. Oscar Taveras will no longer have to share time with Craig.
