Cam Newton Watch - Hairline Fracture In Ribs

The Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton is banged up as we near the start of the 2014 NFL season. Not only is he dealing with an ankle injury, but Newton also has a hairline fracture in his ribs. He will sit out the final preseason game, and coach Ron Rivera is hopeful he can play in the Panthers week 1 game.

These are two injuries that will limit Newton even if he is able to play in the season opener. The ankle injury will slow him down and limit his mobility, and anytime he takes a hit, he'll feel it in his ribs.

Offensive coordinator Mike Shula could keep designed QB runs to a minimum early on in the season to help keep Newton healthy. DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart and Mike Tolbert could see some extra carries in the first few weeks.

If Newton can't go in week 1, backup Derek Anderson would get the start.
