Jon Lester Signs With Chicago Cubs

Jon Lester and the Chicago Cubs have agreed to a 6 year $155 mil deal.  Lester joins Jake Arrieta, Jason Hammel, Travis Wood and Kyle Hendricks in the Cubs rotation. Any time a pitcher moves from the American League to the National League, it is considered a good thing.  Max Scherzer is the next pitcher on the list to get a big, long-term contract.  Expect a lot of action in the coming hours now that the largest domino has fallen.

Since Lester became a full time starter in 2008, only Justin Verlander (117), CC Sabathia (108) and Jered Weaver (107) have won more games (105).  He has made at least 31 starts in each season and lost 10+ games in just two of them! He will be pitching to the Cubs new catcher, Miguel Montero.

The Cubs bullpen is not great, and the team lacks a bonafide closer. Hector Rondon did have 29 saves with a 2.42 ERA and 9 K/9, but I would expect them to sign one of the available free agents like Francisco Rodriguez, Sergio Romo or Rafael Soriano.

The Oakland Athletics now feature a starting rotation of Sonny Gray, Scott Kazmir, Jesse Chavez and Drew Pomeranz and Kendall Graveman .  They will be awaiting the return of Jarrod Parker and A.J. Griffin
