Red Sox Bring Back Justin Masterson

The Boston Red Sox continue to bolster their pitching staff with groundball pitchers, this time bringing back Justin Masterson.  So since trading Jon Lester and John Lackey last season, the Red Sox have added Joe Kelly, Rick Porcello, Wade Miley and Masterson while shipped out Jorge De La Rosa and Allen Webster.  Masterson only started 15 games (67 appearances) in his first stint with the Red Sox, before being traded to the Cleveland Indians back in 2009 for Victor Martinez.  He was traded last season as well to the St. Louis Cardinals for James Ramsey.

Masterson started 154 games for the Indians, 164 appearances, and finished with a 48-61 record. Of the 50 pitchers to make 150+ starts from 2009-14, only Paul Maholm won less games (47). Jason Hammel also won 52 games (includes Masterson's Boston Ws from 09). Masterson's 3.74 BB/9 ranks 5 worst, ahead of just Ubaldo Jimenez, Francisco Liriano, C.J. Wilson and Gio Gonzalez. His 4.39 ERA was 6th worst ahead of just Ricky Nolasco, Kevin Correia, Joe Saunders, Edwin Jackson and Hammel.  His 57% GB% was 2nd best to Tim Hudson.
