NBA Draft Recap & Highlights

The biggest story coming out of the NBA Draft is the Serge Ibaka trade.  Ibaka is now a member of the Orlando Magic, after the Oklahoma City Thunder traded him for Victor Oladipo, Ersan Ilyasova and Domantas Sabonis.  Ignoring the fact that Kevin Durant is an unrestricted free agent, this was a great trade for OKC, adding depth to their roster.  Enes Kanter fantasy basketball draft stock will climb all summer long, while Ibaka will take a hit.  However, Ibaka, Nikola Vucevic and Aaron Gordon has the potential to be a great front court.

This is good news for Evan Fournier who should see more shot attempts in the upcoming NBA season.  He averaged just shy of five 3pts per game, shooting 40% from downtown.  Can't forget about "Super" Mario Hezonja!

With a full roster under contract, Danny Ainge was forced to draft and stash, as he could not work out a trade for a superstar, like Jimmy Butler.  The Celtics did select some quality international players, my favorite being Yabusele, the French Draymond Green.

It was a record setting night for international players drafted in the first round.

The Brooklyn Nets traded Thaddeus Young to the Indiana Pacers for the 20th pick in the draft, and drafted the often injured, Caris LeVert.  It was an interesting draft pick, but one that could pay huge dividends if he proves healthy.  More importantly, the Pacers added Young AND Jeff Teague to a Pacers team that already features Paul George, Myles Turner and Monta Ellis.  They could easily be the #2 team in the East next year - which is the only way to reach the Eastern Conference Finals.  We all know the road to the NBA Finals go through Cleveland and LeBron James in the East.

The Atlanta Hawks got the 12th pick in last nights draft via the Utah Jazz, in exchange for Teague, and selected Taurean Prince from Baylor.  Prince has the ceiling of Kawhi Leonard and the floor of DeMarre Carroll, so a pretty safe pick with high upside.

The Hawks will now be run by Dennis Schroder, who will be entering his fourth year.  He scored 48 points against the Cavaliers in two of the four playoff games, so he has proven he has the ability to score points, when given minutes.  He averaged 14 points, 5.5 assists and 4 rebounds in six starts last year.  He should be able to give you what Teague gave you in fantasy over the past four years, with or without Al Horford coming back.

The Jazz traded their 1st round pick for veteran PG George HillTrey Burke has not panned out and Dante Exum was injured last year, leaving the Jazz no other options but to let Raul Neto and Shelvin Mack run the offense at times.  The Jazz also acquired Marcus Paige, who was selected 55th overall by the Nets.

The Sacramento Kings traded Marco Belinelli to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for the 22nd pick, drafting yet another shooting guard in Malaki Richardson.  First it was Ben McLemore, then it was Nik Staukas, now it's Richardson.  No wonder why DeMarcus Cousins is always so angry.

The New York Knicks traded Robin Lopez, Jerian Grant and Jose Calderon to the Chicago Bulls for Derrick Rose, Justin Holiday and a 2017 2nd round pick.  Rose, Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis will be fun to watch, but don't be that guy that reaches for Rose in fantasy basketball drafts.  Sure, he could have his best season since the 2010-11 season, but the injury risk is too high and he will essentially be the third option on offense.  I wouldn't mind having Rose on my team, but the PG position is deep and the it just got deeper with Kris Dunn, Jamal Murray and Wade Baldwin entering the league.  No need to reach for Rose.

Free agency is going to back so much fun - where will Kevin Durant, Hassan Whiteside, Mike Conley, Al Horford and Dwight Howard sign?! Will DeMar DeRozan return to the Raptors? Is there a team willing to give Harrison Barnes a max deal? NBA Draft Recap Highlights
