Padres Trade Melvin Upton to Blue Jays

The San Diego Padres have traded Melvin Upton Jr. to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for a Hansel Rodriguez.  The Padres are in Toronto for a three game series that started last night, so Upton will just have to get dressed in the other locker room today.

Upton is hitting .256 on the year with 16 home runs, 11 doubles, 20 stolen bases and owns the 10th highest K% among qualified hitters.  He is making $15 mil this year and will turn 32 at the end of August.

This is a strange move for the Blue Jays, who already feature Jose Bautista, Kevin Pillar and Michael Saunders in the OF.  With Bautista returning from injury last night, it is possible that he gets some more playing time at 1B/DH.  Toronto just signed Justin Smoak to a 2 year extension, but it was a team friendly deal and Smoak has not been good in 2016.

The Padres have some of the games best OF prospects waiting patiently at AAA-El Paso.  Manuel Margot is batting .306 with 16 doubles and 10 triples and swiped 24 bases.  Hunter Renfroe is hitting .331 with 27 doubles and 25 home runs.  Either player would be worth owning in fantasy baseball, should they get promoted.
