Dynasty and Chill Rookie Draft Results

Last year, Mike and I joined a 32 team, full IDP, start-up dynasty fantasy football league.  We finished with the 8th most points scored in the league, twice having the best week, yet owned just a 6-7 record.  It was tough considering that we were without our 1st round pick, Adrian Peterson, after September 18th. Things didn't get any better for us when Peterson decided to sign with the New Orleans Saints, as we drafted Mark Ingram in the 2nd round of last years draft!

When it was our turn to pick in the 1st round of the rookie draft, we had a tough choice to make - draft Alvin Kamara and own all three of the Saints RBs or take Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster.  Despite our lackluster group of WRs - Emmanuel Sanders (3.20, 84th overall pick) and Adam Thielen (added in the contraction draft), we decided to go all in on the Saints backfield and drafted Kamara with the 15th pick and added Titans WR Taywan Taylor with the 47th pick (2.15).

Thoughts From Around The League

As reigning champ I was looking forward to this draft a great deal. I was not however looking forward to my 1.32 pick. Amazingly I won this league despite having the great Brock Osweiler as my only startable quarterback option. I was carried to victory in 2016 due in large to my trio of running backs; LeSean McCoy, LeVeon Bell and Legarette Blount. This year I found myself entering the draft with a serviceable yet pedestrian WR corps, an aging Running back corps ( I was smart enough to draft Marshawn Lynch a year ago) and a quarterback who could easily be released at any time by his new team, the Browns. Needless to say I had gaps to fill - and we haven't even addressed my defense yet!

My running backs are getting up there but many other owners don't have nearly the depth I possess at that position. Needless to say I fielded countless offers for all 4 running backs but as the draft wore on my logical targets disappeared one by one. I received some outstanding offers for LeVeon Bell and some very fair offers for Lynch and Blount but in the end I was lucky enough to land DeShone Kizer at pick 1.32 - I'll find a quarterback somewhere amongst my rag tag group of Kizer, Osweiler, Garoppolo and Romo. I guess I better go trade for Cody Kessler just to be safe! - @tradefantasy

With the 1.18 pick in the rookie draft, I took Evan Engram. I started Garrett Celek all of last year at Tight End, so I needed to fill that position quickly. However, with Mitch Trubisky still available, I traded up to get the 1.19 pick as well. I currently have Ben Roethlisberger, but his durability has been an issue of late and he has contemplated retiring. I thought this was a decent opportunity to grab the 2nd overall pick in the NFL draft and a long term quarterback.

I was considering trading up in the draft again to grab a DE or DT. Ultimately, I decided to stay with my pick and wait. At 2.18, I was able to draft Solomon Thomas, who I was considering trading up a few spots for! I was really surprised that he was still available as well. So, after the first two rounds, I was able to draft a position that I was definitely lacking and still end up with the 2nd and 3rd picks in the NFL draft, in Trubisky and Thomas. - @McDonaldA12

Thought I would weigh in as I probably made one of the more surprising early picks...

Unfortunately I was right outside the top five with 1.07 and beyond the top 4 RBs and Corey Davis, none of the remaining players really stand out. I have them all ranked pretty closely.

So, I opted to trade back two spots and pick up Anthony Brown. While cornerback is not a premier position with our scoring system, I expect him to start in Dallas this coming season and to be my top scoring CB.

Then I went ahead and gambled on Myles Garrett. As I mentioned, there are pros and cons to every offensive player from 6-15, so instead of taking an RB who may never have a significant role, I opted to take Garrett in hopes that he is in fact a superstar on the DL.

Finally, I was really excited to land Carlos Henderson in the 2nd round. He looks like he'll play big snaps from the slot immediately in Denver and offers some upside should Thomas or Sanders go down. - @Blair_Ames
