Why The Carolina Panthers Should Draft Isaiah Oliver 24th Overall

With the 24th pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, it is hard for a team to truly target a single player, as there is no way to know what will happen before it is your turn.  But what you can do, is target a position and see if there is enough depth at the position to then create a top 5 list of players with first round grades.  The Carolina Panthers have a real need for help in the secondary and this draft class has some real talent there for them to target.

In acquiring Torrey Smith from the Philadelphia Eagles, the Panthers had to trade Daryl Worley.  That leaves a serious lack of depth at the CB position.  With Denzel Ward and Josh Jackson already drafted, Isaiah Oliver should be next on their list.

He played at Colorado, a school that has been developing excellent defensive backs in recent memory, is a superb athlete who competes in Decathlons and allowed less than 50.0% of targets to his man to be caught in back-to-back seasons.

Carolina has to face Drew Brees/Michael Thomas, Matt Ryan/Julio Jones and Jameis Winston/Mike Evans a combined six times - they need help in coverage.

Mock Draft Results

1.01 - Cleveland Browns - Sam Darnold
1.02 - New York Giants - Saquon Barkley
1.03 - New York Jets - Baker Mayfield
1.04 - Cleveland Browns - Bradley Chubb
1.05 - Denver Broncos - Josh Rosen

    • Our Take: Denver would be ecstatic if Rosen falls to them at pick 5.  His durability is a question mark, but his talent is undeniable.  With Case Keenum in town for two years this will give the Broncos time to get him healthy and develop him into their franchise QB.
1.06 - Indianapolis Colts - Quenton Nelson
1.07 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Derwin James
  • Pick by: David Gonos - Click here to read David's write-up on DavidGonos.com
    • Our Take: Tampa will be fine on offense.  Improving their secondary will go a long way in the NFC South.  The Bucs had the worst pass defense in the NFL last season.  Adding James at safety and the acquisition of Jason Pierre-Paul this Winter will help them improve.
1.08 - Chicago Bears - Roquan Smith
1.09 - San Francisco 49ers - Tremaine Edmunds
  • Pick by: Ron Rigney - BigGuyFantasySports.com
    • Our Take: No matter where Smith/Edmunds are selected in the 1st round, the two of them will always be compared to each other.  Both players are going to be great NFL LBs.
1.10 - Oakland Raiders - Denzel Ward
  • Pick by: Kevin Huo - FantasySixPack.net
    • Our Take: The Raiders would probably prefer one of those two LBs falls to them but Ward is a solid prospect and Oakland's biggest need come draft day is CB.
1.11 - Miami Dolphins - Minkah Fitzpatrick
  • Pick by: David Gonos - Click here to read David's write-up on DavidGonos.com
    • Our Take: Miami needs so much on both sides of the ball, if I were them I would be looking to move this pick to a team that might want Josh Allen before the Bills draft him - I am looking at your Arizona!
1.12 - Buffalo Bills - Josh Allen
1.13 - Washington Redskins - Vita Vea
1.14 - Green Bay Packers - Josh Jackson
  • Pick by: Ron Rigney - Big Guy Fantasy Sports
    • Our Take: They turned last years first round pick into Deshone Kizer, let's hope they develop Jackson into a perennial Pro Bowl CB.
1.15 - Arizona Cardinals - Lamar Jackson
1.16 - Baltimore Ravens - Calvin Ridley
1.17 - Los Angeles Chargets - Da'Ron Payne
1.18 - Seattle Seahawks - Derrius Guice
1.19 - Dallas Cowboys - Rashaan Evans
1.20 - Detroit Lions - Taven Bryan
  • Pick by: Chris Oertle - Click here to read Chris' write-up over at TheFantasyTakeaway.com
    • Our Take: The Lions have bigger needs than a defensive lineman, but Chris believes new Head Coach Matt Patricia will look to solidify his defense line, just like those great Patriots teams.
1.21 - Cincinnati Bengals - James Daniels
  • Pick by: Tony Reimer - FLAFFLHouse.com
    • Our Take: Already added Cordy Glenn to the O-Line, now add Daniels at C and the Bengals could get that offense rolling again in 2018.
1.22 - Buffalo Bills - Leighton Vander Esch
1.23 - New England Patriots - Mike McGlinchey
1.24 - Carolina Panthers - Isaiah Oliver
1.24 - Carolina Panthers - Isaiah Oliver
1.25 - Tennessee Titans - Will Hernandez
1.26 - Atlanta Falcons - Isaiah Wynn
  • Pick by: Craig Talley - FLAFFLHouse.com
    • Our Take: The more time Matt Ryan has to find Julio Jones, the better.
1.27 - New Orleans Saints - Dallas Goedart
1.28 - Pittsburgh Steelers - Mason Rudolph
  • Pick by: Tony Reimer - FLAFFLHouse.com
    • Our Take: Not a fan of teams ready to win now drafting pieces for the future in the 1st round but Big Ben is nearing the end of his career.  They will need to draft defensive players with the next few picks.
1.29 - Jacksonville Jaguars - DJ Moore
1.30 - Minnesota Vikings - Billy Price
1.31 - New England Patriots - Marcus Davenport
  • Pick by: Chris Oertle - Click here to read Chris' write-up over at TheFantasyTakeaway.com
    • Our Take: Well what do you know, the Patriots get another steal late in the 1st round of the NFL Draft.  Knowing them though, they will trade out and acquire an extra pick or two.
1.32 - Philadelphia Eagles - Jaire Alexander
