NFL Draft Round 1 Fantasy Football Redraft Quick Reads

Quarterbacks

We imagine none of these QBs will play in 2018.  The Browns traded for Tyrod Taylor, the Jets have Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater, the Bills signed A.J. McCarron, the Cardinals signed Sam Bradford and the Ravens have Joe Flacco.  If I had to guess, Rosen plays first due to a Bradford injury, followed by the Bills Mafia booing McCarron off the field in favor of Allen.  Mayfield, Darnold and Jackson are at least a year away from starting back-to-back games, unless for whatever reason the Browns/Jets/Ravens are closer to a top 10 pick, than the AFC Wild Card.

Running Backs

As fans of the New York Football Giants fan, we are elated the front office went with Barkley over any of the QBs.  Big Blue has struggled to produce fantasy worthy RBs in recent memory, but Barkley is the best to wear the uniform since Tiki Barber. I am not sure Barkley is going to be that great of a PPR RB as a rookie - since 2004 the only RB not named Tiki to catch 50 passes is Shane Vereen in 2015.  Vereen caught 44 passes last season, as did Ahmad Bradshaw and Derrick Ward, but thats it as far as NYG RB pass catchers.  That being said, last year Vereen and Wayne Gallman (34 rec) combined for 101 targets, but last year was a lost cause once Odell Beckham suffered his injury.  The good news out of last year is despite the fact that teams knew the Giants had a limited passing games, Orleans Darkwa and Gallman were both in the top 30 in yards per carry.  Not a very meaningful stat, but if they can pick up 4 yards per play behind that line, Barkley's gotta be good for close to 5 right?!  The addition of Nate Solder at LT and hopefully a 2nd/3rd round draft pick on the line will help the Giants get back to a team known for pounding the rock!

Many people were shocked to see the Seahawks draft Penny, with Derrius Guice/Nick Chubb/Sony/Michel all still available.  However, Penny was the most elusive RB in this draft class, according to Pro Football Focus.
Elusive Rating (RB)
As dependent on their blocking as they are, what are running backs actually creating on their own? The PFF elusive rating sifts out their work beyond the help they get. Using the number of missed tackles runners force on all touches (rushing and receiving) and our Yards After Contact tallies, the elusive rating formula spits out a score that helps rank the league’s best at making things happen when it’s completely up to them.

Much like Barkley, Penny's biggest problem will be the Seahawks offensive line.  Last year was an absolute mess for Seattle RBs.  One thing to remember, Penny is NOT known as a pass catcher so his value is going to take a little bit of a hit in PPR leagues.

The Patriots selecting Sony Michel is a difficult one to process.  They now have five RBs on the depth chart:
  1. James White
  2. Rex Burkhead
  3. Sony Michel
  4. Jeremy Hill
  5. Mike Gillislee
We have been trained to stay away from Patriots RBs in fantasy football and it looks like that will be a trend that continues in 2018.

Wide Receivers

For starters, the Panthers better hope Moore has a better career than Ridley.  I don't totally agree D.J. should have been selected ahead of Calvin.  That being said, both guys have a chance to make an impact in fantasy football this year.  However, Moore is essentially the 4th option for Cam Newton with Greg Olsen, Devin Funchess and Christian McCaffrey the focus of the offense.  However, if you get Moore open in space, good luck tackling him - he was tied for the lead among all WRs in the draft class with 20 miss tackles after the catch, according to PFF.  If he can do for Newton and the Panthers offense what Ted Ginn did during their Super Bowl run, this Panthers offense could be lethal in 2018.

There is no way the Falcons ever thought Ridley would fall to them at pick 26.  Matt Ryan now has Julio Jones on one side and Calvin Ridley on the other, oh and they are the same age?!  Remember when I said the Panthers could have a lethal offensive in 2018...well the Falcons offense has the potential to be explosive!  With Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman out of the backfield, Julio/Ridley on the outside and Mohamed Sanu in the slot...good luck covering all that.  Ryan had a bad year in 2017, but now in year two of Steve Sarkisian's offense, lets see if they can get back to anywhere near the 33.8 points per game they scored under Kyle Shanahan

Tight Ends

Hurst will be 25 before the 2018 NFL Season kicks-off, but could play a huge role in the Baltimore Ravens offense as a rookie.   Joe Flacco hasn't had much luck with TEs in recent years, largely due to injuries, but when he finds one he likes, he will target him.  37 year old Ben Watson caught 61 passes last year (77 targets).  Probably a better PPR option than standard as a Ravens TE under Joe Flacco has never averaged 50 yards per game and 2012/16 Dennis Pitta is the only TE to gained 600+ yards.  Todd Heap twice finished in the 590s.
